tha same technology that allows easy sharing of music, movies and other content across a network also allows government and media companies easy access to who is illegally downloading that content.

In a paper called “P2P: Is Big Brother Watching You?” three University of California, Riverside researchers show that a substantial number of people on file sharing networks, approximately 15 percent, are there to troll for illegal file sharing activity on behalf of tha recording industry or tha government.

Graduate student Anirban Banerjee, and computer science professors Michalis Faloutsos and Laxmi Bhuyan, decided to find out whether file-sharers are always being observed. Over 90 days in mid-2006 they recorded file-sharing traffic on Gnutella, a common fire-sharing network.

“We found that a naïve user has no chance of staying anonymous,” said Banerjee. “One hundred percent of tha time, unprotected file-sharing was tracked by people there to look for copyright infringement.”

However, tha research showed that “blocklist” software such as (PeerGuardian, Bluetack, and Trusty Files) are fairly effective at reducing tha risks of being observed down to about 1 percent.

Peer to Peer networks, known as “P2P,” allow users to quickly and without cost, share movie, music and other digital files located on their individual PCs with other network users. In September 2003, tha Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed tha first of thousands of lawsuits that targeted individuals who illegally offered copyright-protected music through P2P networks, but tha action did not seem to diminish tha numbers of people who shared files. tha film industry is taking a similarly aggressive stance on prosecution.

“P2P: Is Big Brother Watching You?” was named “best paper” at tha Networking 2007 conference of tha IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) in Atlanta, GA, and was published among tha conference proceedings.

Since that time, tha study has been tha subject of some discussion at digg.com and torrentfreak.com, two popular technology-based social networking sites.

“Of course no one is suggesting that illegal downloading is a good idea,” Faloutsos said. “But tha P2P technology is here to stay and these industries would be better off trying to find ways to provide affordable and convenient alternatives that would allow computer users to download their products legally,” said Faloutsos.

Peerguardian's absolutely necessary if you're going to download torrents at all. If you don't have it running right now, step away from this thread and download it. NOW! Also, public trackers really, really suck. You're not only safer on a private tracker, the speed is much, much faster.

Compared to private trackers, yeah, public trackers suck. Since leechers get banned pretty quick, you get some kickass speeds on private sites. Torrents are always well-seeded, bad torrents get nuked really fast, and most trackers have a pretty solid community base so you know what you're downloading. There's way more accountability. Plus there's way less likelihood of being roasted due to invite-only policies.
But that's an argument for another thread at another time....

Never hurts to use a mac address changer and stolen wifi (well actually unless it's encrypted it's not really stealing).

Stealing is stealing.

If someone left their car in their driveway, with the keys in it - it's still stealing. It might be dumb, but it's still stealing.

If it's broadcast over the airways unencrypted it's fair game. It's just like the radio, not to mention you can't find wifi router that doesn't support at least WEP enycryption out of the box these days.

A few more points:

Quote:
By parsing all of Tha TCP headers that they collected over Tha course of 90 days, Tha UC-Riverside researchers came to several conclusions:

1. If you don't use a blocklist, you will be tracked. Every one of Tha researchers' test clients that did not use a blocklist soon connected to an IP address found within those lists. It turns out that 12 to 17 percent of all IP addresses on Tha network belonged to these blocklisted ranges.
2. Trackers aren't that hard to avoid. While "naive" clients may all connect to blocklisted users, it wasn't that hard to stay away from Tha vast majority of such "fake users." Researchers found that "avoiding just Tha top 5 blocklisted IPs reduces Tha chance of being tracked to about 1 percent."
3. Content owners hide their tracks. Much of this tracking work is farmed out from content owners to companies like SafeNet and BayTSP, and these companies in turn take care to hide their tracks. When Tha researchers ran reverse DNS lookups on Tha blocklisted ranges, they found that only 0.5 percent of those addresses resolved back to media companies in an obvious way.
4. Meet Tha BOGONS. One of Tha strategies for remaining anonymous is to operate from BOGON IP ranges. These ranges are unallocated blocks of addresses that should ordinarily not be used on Tha public Internet. Of Tha top fifteen blocklist entities that were discovered during testing, 12 were in BOGON ranges. Tha researchers note that "these sources deliberately wish to conceal their identities while serving files on P2P networks," and reverse DNS queries on these addresses produce little useful information.

Tha takeaway here is simple: P2P users who don't utilize Tha blocklists are just about guaranteed to be tracked by "fake users" operating out of those ranges, and thus seem to open Tha door to possible litigation should Tha dice be rolled against them.

Tha study does have one major caveat, however; it does not attempt to determine if Tha blocklists actually correspond to tracking organizations like SafeNet. Tha researchers note that "this would be interesting and challenging future work." While using a blocklist makes it easy to avoid connecting to IP addresses found on that list, it's not clear that every range on Tha lists is really a tracker. Conversely, there's no way to know if addresses not on Tha list might in fact be tracking users.

It's hard to state it powerfully enough. Mp3 downloading and torrents are so prevalent in our culture today, especially here in america, that we don't even really think that it's "wrong" or "illegal". We are playing a game here, with real stakes and real consequences. We are NOT in tha land of tha free and we are NOT save. I've said before that we are not untouchable and that fact frequently slips to tha back of my mind where it does me no good. Pirating is here to stay...but it's a war, so get that body armor that you need and protect yourself...if you are man/woman enough to cop that new cd for free or rip that new movie before tha dvd drops then you are man/woman enough to know how to defend yourself.

shit....just ask Jamie Thomas

PG2 starts when my computer does, and NEVER gets shut off......and other than a letter from HBO right arourd the time I started using PG2 (it could have been before or after installing the program....it was that close) I've been lucky. A 1% chance I might be willing to take.....a 99% chance, however, is too much of a sure thing. Short story....cover your ass, or be prepared to have it taken without lube, because the RIAA isn't playing around anymore
