Can you guys recommend that which you consider to be the best partitioning software for Windows XP and Vista.
Needs to deal with NTFS and Fat32 and needs to be able to (among all else) resize existing partitions.

If there is a Freeware version out there that is as good as any "pay for" software I'm all for it. If not then...

Acronis is one I've heard of distantly

Partition Magic is one I've used for years, though I didn't know it was owned by norton

Shareware Connection seems like a good place to browse through...there are a number of programs on it that seem to be either free or at least you can get a demo


so is File Hippo. This is where I get most of my programs from...or at least this is where i research and decide which one i want. Massively helpful resource.

And last but utterly not least is SourceForge.net: Welcome to SourceForge.net...a little place that has just about everything and a community of experts in every field.

ive used partition magic as said above. Im not sure if you can resize partitions without losing data D:

For partitions, I usually pop in a Linux distribution that can usually be ran VIA CD/DVD-ROM. Most Linux operating system's do not require to be installed to the hard drive to run, they can also be loaded into your ram; I personally use Xubuntu.

On another, similar note, I went on vacation a few weeks ago with my wife and kids. Gone in bliss for 10 days just spoiling ourselves rotten when I decided to buy Mishi a laptop. Lookin around I found just what she'd want, as well as what she'd need, that matched up to my standards. Love it...best $800 I've ever spent on a laptop. Only problem is that it came with Vista on it. Here's where it gets interesting:

Standing in Best Buy while tha hottest girl EVER (except for Mishi of course) went to go get my purchase out of tha back, I decided to chat with tha guy "running" tha computer area. I know, first off it was probably a bad idea going to Best Buy, but I expected this guy to know at least a LITTLE about computers...so I asked him a simple question.

"I've heard alot of conflicting accounts on this, so tell me....how hard is it to take Vista off this laptop and replace it with XP Pro SP 2?" Now I was expecting tha usual tripe about how Vista was tha second coming and all, but I still asked. I was shocked at his answer
"Well, I wouldn't do it if I were you....could mess up tha whole chipset (really?). Only thing that I'd put XP on, ever, is a Mac."


I am NOT shitting you. I stuttered for a sec, trying to come up with a response to that off tha wall answer that he gave me in all seriousness, then asked where tha USB mice were. I packed up my purchases and left tha store.

Interesting though I've never (oddly enough) spent any time, over the years, looking into Linux.
No. I'm a reasearch freak. Especially when it comes to making a decision that could have seriously harsh consequences. On this subject there are all too many horror stories out there so I'm going to plod a bit. That said, I am currently leaning towards Acronix. I'd like to make a decision by the end of this week.

I've made a lot of purchases at BB over the years and I have to say while they have their problems like all businesses, I have generally found them to be a cut above the competition.

Thats a hoot.
My son has Vista running on his laptop. It's fine, no real issues. But I wouldn't want it for the simple reason that I have too much software that won't yet run on it. Additionally, there is a shit load of freeware in the marketplace that runs on XP but won't on Vista.

So I settled on Acronis Disc Director Suite - $50 from their site.

I hated to part with the dough as I may not use it often but it has other useful functions as well.
It took about an hour and a half to repartition, moving 10 gigs from the Virtual drive to C:

Just to bad I can't back charge Sony for their stupidity in taking an 80G hard drive and allocating 14 to the one the operating system is on

Then again, this 3 year old Vaio notebook is one of the sweetest computers I've ever owned so this Easter Sunday I am
