I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it seemed to be the best pick.

I was looking to upgrade my stock stereo in my 1998 Honda Accord 2D. What parts do i need? As far as I can tell, I need an amp, 2 subs, 2 door speakers, and 2 rear panel speakers. Anything else?

And is $600 enough to get a stereo that sounds pretty good/great?

You don't need anything except a new headunit and possibly installation kit to make the wiring easier and make the installation look nicer.
Now, to sound decent, you'll want to replace stock speakers with something better. A subwoofer is nice, but not necessary. Same with an amplifier.

Honestly, for most people simply replacing the headunit and speakers all the way around will yield acceptable sound quality and volume.
$600 isn't lot when it comes to car audio, to be honest.
If you're talking about amps & subwoofers, you're also talking about running wires and audio signal cables and possibly replacing speaker wiring.. For a subwoofer, you'll likely need a box, as well. All that adds up quicker than you'd think, particularly if you want it to sound decent.

Here is my suggestion:
Get a headunit that has a built-in amplifier and subwoofer preamp output along with replacement speakers. Get that installed and see if it sounds acceptable to you. If it sounds acceptable to you, then you've saved a bunch of money. If you need the additional kick in the bass (pun intended ), then add an amplifer and subwoofer(s).

If you want recommendations for what gear to get, I suggest two things:
1 - Don't get any crap that is sold at a flea market or discount store.
2 - Avoid Sony like the plague.
Honestly, you're going to want to go to a local shop and compare sound quality for yourself. And sound quality is NOT how loud you can crank it up in the store.
Don't rely on someone else's opinion, be it online or in meatspace. If it's someone you know, ask if you can hear their system and ask what they like & don't like about it.

Personally, I have all JBL gear in my truck, save for the subwoofer, which is a small specialty company that was recently bought out. It sounds great, and well worth the investment.

I would also have them look at your rear speakers. i got a new deck and it blew out my stock speakers when i turned it up to 10. I got new rear speakers and I can get it up to 20 with no fuzz.
