Default Free Anti-Virus Protection?

My subscription to anti-virus protection is due to expire. I was using Norton, and, quite honestly for what I paid for it, it SUCKED. It was always coming up with errors. I had to uninstall and reinstall it a few times because it would just randomly decide not to open or do anything. So, basically, I don't want to use it again.

And...I'd kind of like to not have to pay for virus protection, if possible. That's a big "if" because I do want my computer to have decent protection, and if that means I have to pay, then I'll just suck it up and pay.

So, anyone have any reccomendations of good anti-virus protection, free (preferably) or otherwise?

I hate Norton.
I use AVG, and have for ages. I've never been infected after I started using it. 100% free

Link

Hope that helps, it's a great program. You should be straight with AVG tho, It's only basic virus protection but as long as you are running a few other things you should be ok. Also, being up to date is essential, I have it set to automatically update my PC (and boot up) around 8am when I wake up everyday. Very convinient...

Don't download suspicious files, especially email attachments. Get something to clean up spyware and malware (Search & Destroy)

If you want something that has anti-malware/spyware built in, I'd go with Avira Antivir

Link

I use that on our downstairs PC just cuz it's old and doesnt' need a bunch of other junk on it...

If you like either program you can buy them too and receive 'full protection', although with safe internet usage ( and common sense) you don't really need the full program. Good luck Blondie, surf safe

Hate is a pretty strong word. Are you sure you meant to say "hate" or is it more like "strongly dislike"?

Hello!
We're talking about an inanimate object here right?
Unless somehow you misunderstood and thought that "Norton" was a real live person

I stopped using Norton right after it's migration to Windows from DOS. It's bloated, intrusive and way overpriced.
The last time I had to deal with it was on a friend's new computer. She installed the 'trial version', didn't like it and couldn't uninstall it.
It took me seemingly forever to drill down and delete all remnants of it and only after finding a user group's back door solution to root out the hated little fucker
Never again seys I...

I hate Norton too!

AVG and Adaware have kept our machines clean for years!

In the rare case of those pesky bugs that won't come out with either...I recommend starting your machine in 'safe mode with networking', then scrub it well with Trend Micro's 'Housecall', available on-line!

I use Avast, and I like it very much. Since I started using it, I haven't had a virus.
