I was wondering if anyone could show me some resources on how to build a website. I'm going to be building it for a relative for his small business. He already owns a domain name. I know I'll need a place to host it. What I don't know is how to build it. I do know some basic html. That's the only language I know though. Do I need software like Apache or something? The only websites I've ever "built" were like angelfire, geocities, myspace. So the only things I really know is basic html. Any help would be appreciated as well as any online resources.

What type of website do you want?

Do you already know what you want it to look like? Are you intending to sell stuff from this site, or is it purely informational?

I'm not sure what you quite mean by "type". It's going to be purely informational I believe. Definitely not selling any product. It's for a relatives radon testing business. When I try and get on the site now it says

"The requested URL / was not found on this server.
Apache/1.3.34 Server at ***** Port 80"

Which is to be expected. Just showing you that if that helps. Basically it's for showing pictures and information about the services he offers. I believe he just tests for Radon, some sort of deadly gas I guess.

Don't bother coding anything. Use a content management system.

Hmm looks interesting. So Joomia! just kind of does all the html work for me? I basically know what FTP is although I have never used it. Would I just FTP Joomia! onto the server.

Also what about web hosting. Any recommendations? I found the WebHostingGeeks website which had a top 10 of webhosting sites. This site won't need much. Won't have many visitors at all. Don't need much bandwith.

Why do you ask this question in a forum that's focussed on marijuana?
Don't you think you'd get more productive answers if you were to ask this question of people who build websites instead?

It's like going into a collection of chefs and asking how to change the oil in your car... Someone might know, but it's certainly not the best source of information, ya know?


That said...
If you're getting the message that it couldn't find the URL with an Apache server message, then you have a host already. You need to get to that host and post some content, probably via FTP.

Honestly, it sounds like you bit off more than you can chew. It's pretty obvious that you have no clue as to what you're doing.

Well I haven't bit off anything yet. He just asked if I could. I haven't given him an answer yet. Honestly the website will be super simple. Maybe a home page with a couple of other pages with pictures and information. The business is super small, a one to two man operation.

I know that I don't know much now. But I'm a pretty fast learner I like to think.
