He's never used an optical mouse on a woodgrain surface, it appears.
And it really does depend on the woodgrain pattern. If the pattern is high-contrast (light wood with dark "veins") it will probably screw up the optical mouse. A subtle woodgrain pattern is less likely to have any effect.
This is the same logic behind my suggestion for a solid color mousepad.
