Default Wireless LAN help...

Ok, I have a little bit of a tech quandary here...

I have two computers...computer one is my personal PC, running XP, connected via a cable modem.

Computer two is a PowerMac G4, equipped with an airport card (original series).

I want to buy a linksys or netgear wireless acess point, but i'm not sure how to get the airport card on the mac to pick up the signal and be able to use it. I've only heard vague information on it working

Before I go out and buy all the crap I need, I just was wondering if any of you techies had ever heard or know how this can be done? I don't care about sharing files...just want to share the bandwith.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with linksys and love it. Wireless internet is awesome. I am not sure if your set up would work, but I am sure there is someone on the board that can help ya.

I'm guessing that since it's the older card, it's 802.11b

As long as everything's 802.11b capable, it should work. However, I've heard that different brand wireless products haven't always worked together.

Just make sure that the SSID field matches, they use the same channel, and if WEP is enabled, it has a matching encryption bit (e.g., 64 bit, 128 bit, 256 bit), key type, and key value.

BTW, I hate wireless. I'm using it now (on different PCs) and I think it's a POS. I have my computer wired to my router.

I had wireless back at my mom's house, and we all hated it. Range was limited, and the freaking weather was a big factor as well. We had 3 laptops going, so it seemed appropriate, but the mobility benefits simply didn't make up for the problems encountered.

We were using an entirely Linksys system, forget what model, so it wasn't just a generic type. We're all hardwired now at my new place, and you obviously can't go wrong with that.

Just letting you know the costs aren't really worth what you get out of it...

LoL, the mac has the 802.11 card in it because we had a ibook that we were networking with wirelessly...it worked flawlessly in my home. The G4 computer with the wireless network card installed could act as a router/acess point for the ibook.

So I know it works between two macs...just not between a mac and a PC

Well, by airport card do you mean airport extreme? Because those use 802.11g so you will need a 802.11g access point. Your PC will also need a 802.11g card, if it doesnt already have one. Or you could replace the 802.11g wireless card in the MAC with a 802.11b card and get a 802.11b access point, which ever way is cheaper. Like cheeba said though, just make sure the access point and the wifi cards are all using the same standard and you will be fine, either 802.11b or 802.11g.

Aight..the G4 has a wireless 802.11b card...and I just got a linksys 802.11b wireless router. It SHOULD all work...the mac just has to pick up the signal I think..

BTW, our G4 is so old that it's the first computer to have wireless support...it's a 400mhz G4 w/128mb or RAM...LOL, it's so old compared to my PC. And my PC is like 3 years old.

DaDornta it will work between a mac and a pc you need to use the network protocol called apple talk, it allows pcs and macs to talk across a network do a search for networking with macs you'll find what your lookin for.

im not sure. i think that apple and pc run on different wireless systems ( i might be wrong ) but anyways i think you can get a wireless router that can do both.. im not 100% sure, but i think so.
