1. Pretend you're the RIAA or some dude trying to pass around fake files
2. Set up an fserve
3. Record the IP addresses and/or hostnames of everyone who logs into your fserve
4. Report all downloads to their isp (note: don't actually do this step)


To set up an fserve (in mIRC):

0. Go to mIRC
1. click DCC (left side of Options screen)
2. click on Server (left side of Options screen again)
3. click on "Enable DCC server"
4. click on Listen for: [Send/Chat/Fserve] (all of them)
5. click on IRC (left side of options screen)
6. (for recording purposes) click on logging
7. Automatically log: chats (or both)
8. Put the following line in your custom.ini (or click on Scripts editor):
on *:TEXT:TRIGGER:*:/fserve $nick MAXGETS "THE FSERVE'S DIRECTORY"
(and, of course, replace TRIGGER, MAXGETS, and "THE FSERVE'S DIRECTORY" with what you want them to be)
9. click "OK" when you see the Fileserver warning window (when someone connects)
10. (for recording purposes) Whenever someone connects, do /whois nick (where nick is their nick) and write the result down somewhere
11. If you want, you can make one of those fancy fserver ads, with the slots and queues and filesizes and all that nice stuff, and run it every few minutes or so
12. be aware that you might have some problems if you can't look up your local host (your own computer). To get around that, go to Options > Connect > Local Info and fill in your IP address and/or hostname.


And it's always possible for someone to put a trojan in an executable, no matter where you get it from. (but then again, you're right, there's no built-in spyware with IRC)

The point I was trying to make was that IRC downloads are prone to some of the same hazards as peer-to-peer or even downloading from websites - NOT that any one way is better than the other. You should never completely trust the person at the other end of your connection.

fair enough. new servers pop up all the time so it makes it hard to track people down. much like with p2p, with an ip the most they can do is threaten your isp to devulge the information. if the isps refuse then there is nothing they can do.

Well its nice to know how to steal files via irc but do any of you people here acutally use it for the whole communication purpose, if so what server/channles?

bascially irc was the first system for multipe people to connect to a server and talk to eachother, aim icq msn yahoo and such bascally function simalerly but aside form chatrooms and instant messages alot is difrent. Also IRC networks are more chatroom based rather than IM based.
