| All this computer stuff is to confusing lol I called a computer store today and they are going to come out tomorrow and have a look at my system to determine if there will be any hardware malfunctions- they mentioned something about the usb modem and Nvdia game card, conflicting with the installation process. With any luck, I will be running Linux in a week or so. |

| Most DSL gateways have an ethernet interface as well as the USB. They'll probably sell you an ethernet card. Don't pay more than $15 for one. Don't let them install it if you can do it yourself.

| I wouldn't think that a video card would mess with the instalation of your gateway and hookin it up with usb shouldn't be a big deal but i have been wrong before just don't want to see them charge you for unneeded stuff. |

| They will probably want to recompile your kernel. The reason for recompiling is that not all the drivers for all the hardware in the world can fit into a single kernel. Most kernels must be custom-built to suit the hardware they run on. Also, having a custom kernel will make your Linux system faster. edit: Ask for kernel version 2.6.2. The 2.6 kernel is MUCH faster than 2.4. |

| from their website: OpenBSD is thought of by many security professionals to be the most secure UNIX-like operating system as the result of a 10-member 1.5-year long comprehensive source code security audit. for more details: http://www.openbsd.com/security.html http://www.openbsd.com/crypto.html by the way, your signature rocks! |

| Microsoft also has a "study" that says two Windows servers are faster than a Linux mainframe. Also, OpenBSD only has 6 to 12 people looking for bugs. Linux has too many to count. But to each his own. If you like OpenBSD, then you like OpenBSD. edit: Looks like it's a completely different type of study than microsoft had... i'm going to leave the comment there because it is funny. |

| Ya know, I have considered running one of the bsd variants for a long time. Been so busy this past couple years that it just never has happend. I got a spare box now so maybe once I get done with things around here and at the office (Network Switch Over) I think I might give it a go. I've heard really good things about it, thats for sure. Gotta tell ya, though. I do love my slackware. While it's not the most secure beast out of the box, a good admin can always make security a priority.

| I run both Red Hat and Windows 2000, both on a laptop that came with XP! After a year or so of XP never running correctly, I decided to wipe the slate clean with my system restore disc that came with the computer. Unfortunately, the disc was part of a bad lot, and would not complete the installation. Unfortunately, neither Sony nor microsoft wanted to help me out, being too busy pointing fingers at each other ("Hardware problem!" "No, software problem!!"), so I went ahead and put 2000 on there. Since then, 2000 has been a much, much more stable platform from my experience. I used Partition Commander to split the hard drive again, and put Linux on there in case Windows ever decides to quit on me again. I have the equivalent of Microsoft Office that came with the Red Hat, and use it quite a bit. I have never had a single app crash in Linux, and from what I understand, application crashes in Linux will almost never crash the whole OS. No more Blue Screen of Death!!! |
