Dear Internet Customer,
Our records indicate that your cable modem has used in excess of 70 gigabytes
of data in the past 30 days. Most Xpress high speed Internet customers use
less than 1 gigabyte within a month.
Often this can occur without your knowledge. For instance, if you are using
file sharing programs which can run in the background 24 hours a day, they will
use your modem even while you are not at your computer. It is also possible
that your system could have been compromised by a "Trojan horse" program or
other virus or spyware tool that is allowing someone else to route traffic
through your system. If you are unaware how this extremely high amount of data
usage is occurring on your system, we suggest that you do a complete virus scan
of your PC, and scan for known Trojans and "back door" proxy programs. Online
scans for these can be run at one of the following sites:
Also be sure to check that your operating system and your antivirus programs
are completely up to date with the latest patches and security updates.
Windows updates can be run from:
and you should configure your antivirus program so the updates are done
automatically.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this notice, please feel free
to call the Access Communications Internet help desk at 565-5357 or if you live
outside Regina, call toll-free at 877-469-0418 for assistance.
This notice is delivered only as a customer courtesy to inform you that your
modem is generating levels of traffic that could adversely affect our network,
especially during peak hours where the ability of others to enjoy the service
could be impeded. If your modem continues to exceed reasonable levels Access
Communications reserves the right to limit usage in order to protect our
network. The criteria for what constitutes excessive usage is subject to
change.
If you were already aware of the amount of data traffic being passed we ask
that you attempt to keep your average usage to less than 50 gigabytes per
month. If the usage continues at the current pace (exceeding 70 gigs in 30
days) our automated network protection system will monitor your modem and may
reduce your modem speed to less than full speed (still double the upload speed
of XpressLite Internet), as necessary to maintain our network integrity. This
throttling is temporary and occurs automatically. Your modem will reset to
your normal speed when the automated system determines that it is safe to do
so.
You can track your modem usage at the following Access page:
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the usage on your modem or the
Access Communications usage policy, again please feel free to contact our
helpdesk or email us at help@accesscomm.ca
Thanks for you attention to the above and your continued patronage,
