Tech support finally came over and installed Linux; or at least tried to... He duel booted Linux and windows on the same system. He was able to get windows to hook up to the internet, but was not able to do the same with the Linux. An error message came up saying something about the modem/ drivers not being compatible with “the system.” However, they did provide a link to a website that had the correct drivers. But, He kept downloading the wrong ones. In addition, kept having to sign on, back and forth to windows in order to get access the internet, as well as having to sign back on Linux to see if could get linux connected to the internet. He was doing this for hours; dude just kept downloading the wrong drivers, so finely, he gave up and went home. I paid the dude $200 bucks, pretty much for nothing. Well... he did Duel boot the system and install 9.2 he just could not find the driver, or get Linux connected to the internet. I went to the Linux website, and they said that the (ALCATEL SPEED TOUCH USB MODEM) was supported. They gave “him” a website to download it from, but he kept getting confused. If I knew more about computers/ Linux, I would do it myself. I am just afraid that I would somehow mess up the connection or the installation of the Linux 9.2 if I tried messing with it. Linux is a very new to me and I do not want to mess up the configuration to the point where it would have to be installed again>$$$.
Dose anyone know of a place where I can somehow download the drivers for the SPEED TOUCH USB MODEM? Alternatively, is it possible to download the driver using the windows half of the system, then somehow transfers the download to the Linux part of the OS in order to get Linux connected to the internet?
Any links or information would be appreciated

Did you try the drivers on this site http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/support.htm ? Seriously though, don't hire anyone to do this for you, do it yourself. Linux isn't that user friendly, you can't just turn it on and have it work all the time like with Windows. Some times you have to research problems and do some reading, you will be much better off if you figure things out yourself. Don't worry about screwing it up, you can always reinstall. And by figureing things out by yourself, I don't mean to be affraid to ask for help, just don't pay anyone for it. Good luck.

Also, what was the site that the error was telling to go to?

I been surfing the net for days, trying to locate the driver that would make a windows system compatible with linux. I download the drivers using windows since I’m unable to connect to the internet with Linux. Then I’d try going back to the linux set up wizard. it recognizes everything, but the modem. An error message comes up saying: the system doesn’t support the “modem” I have a feeling it might have something to do with this NTFS or some kind of file sharing. Win xppro trips out when you do anything to the system that is not supported with Microsoft.
There is nothing else that could possibly be done, I’ve doen it all.. amazing…

You need a alcatel microcode.
You can provide it now via floppy or youre windows partition, or skip and do it latter< that the message they gave me] I tried them all nothing worked

I even bought a book: Linux kiss the blue screen of death goodbye. They mention all different kinds of installation methods and make it sound so simple….. amazing….. windows is 10000 times user friendly then Linux.

Linux and all *nix variants are difficult to a novice, it took me a good year to finally get it down. As for if Windows is MORE user friendly that depends on what kind of user you are. Open source is a great thing if you can use it For the average person though, Windows is very user friendly, but has a lot of OTHER problems which to SOME people (like an IT person) can be a PITA compared to dealing with Linux problems.

Perhaps try a different variant of Unix, FreeBSD is a good system to run on.

NTFS will not make your modem not work. The problem is that the code that
communicates between Linux (the kernel or core operating system) and the
modem is not compiled into your system.

Call your DSL provider and get a modem that has an ethernet connection.
That should fix your linux-not-on-the-internet problem. Or you could
recompile your kernel, but that never works out the first time you do it. or
the second. I just recently figured out how to do that.

I have been trying to get Linux connected to the internet for over 7 days now and have not had any luck in doing so; all the driver downloads are too complicated. I’m not sure if when downloading the files they are supposed to automatically save the download to the modem/hard drive, or if I’m supposed to somehow copy them to a floppy disc and then somehow transfer or drop them in some folder at the linux side of the OS

Something gotta give… I am about ready to machine gun this damn computer/modem and buy a new one. You would think a 3 thousand dollars computer would be able to simply detect a modem or be able to just simply download the driver and then be good to go with the drake set up wizard.

Seriously an ethernet modem *will* solve your problem.

edit: don't let them tell you you can't have one. Threaten to stop giving
them money if they don't send you one (you have to buy/rent it however)
and if that doesn't work, threaten their superviser. Repeat until you have an
ethernet modem.

My ISP said they wont support an Ethernet modem, that’s’ insane. I’m going to call a cable company and see if they will support linux and hook me up with a ethernet modem, and if they would I’m going to tell sbc “ c ya.

Everyone I know who has a cable modem uses ethernet... seems pretty safe

you need to partition the hard drive, then put mandrake linux in, select the partition and install, then at the start up screen select linux mandrake then you have an operating system that is linux and you can switch.
