Dose anyone here know anything about PHP I was thinking about making an online message board, however I am not sure witch host to choose or what kind would be the best. I often here people mention PHP. I have no idea what PHP is but it seems to be very popular among web developers so I guess my question to anyone who cares to answer is what is PHP and what is the difference between PHP based message boards from others. I came upon a board where someone was asking for a free PHP board and could not help but wonder why that person kept insisting on wanting to use PHP. I have destroyed many computers in the past by downloading stuff off the internet, so I am a little skeptical to download anything that would cause harm to my computer so before I download This I figured I would get some feedback on this famous PHP and see if it would be worth downloading. Any information and feedback would be appreciated.

All webpages are coded in html, A .html file is the same thing every time you look at the webpage, A .php is a webpage that uses server side scripting. PHP will create the html on the spot so that the webpage can be different depending on whos vewing it. For example, this thered is at showthread.php?t=28725 PHP will go into the forums database find out what thread 28725 is and show you the posts for it. This is a probally a pritty bad discription, but I dont really know how else to explan it.

PHP is really the source coding for message board programs. phpBB, IPS, and vBulletin (which this forum uses) are all coded in PHP and MySQL. PHP is rather easy to use because it bears a similarity to HTML and is relatively easy to learn. Knowing PHP helps in making changes to the actual server code. The software to run a board like this is relatively small, but this program destroying my computer is the least of your worries, especially if you are using your own computer as the host. No major forum coder is going to put malicious material in the bundle.

Computer science is amazing. There are so many scripting languages in the computer world it is hard to tell what each ones dose, and witch is better. Sometimes I’ll hit up aboard where computer geeks hang at and read up on what they are saying but it is almost impossible to catch on to what they are saying because it seems like one has to know every language from java to c programming to get a basic idea on how to build a decent website. I am new to computers, so sometimes I will mess with things such as the reg edit (which I will never do again) because cretin programs assume that everybody knows how to script languages and edit a registry. The only concern I had about the PHP thing was that I wasn’t sure if the world would have access to what is inside my computer, or I was afraid that if I did install the php without knowing what it was that I might somehow mess up and allow the whole world to gain access to my computer cause I might have made a mistake by doing so because I didn’t know what I was doing LOL ~ I’m so stoned LOL ![]()

| By the way, php is enabled on your shell account, so you should be able to try it out using that. That way you wont have to install anything on your own system.

PsYcHoLoGiCaL, hey, hows it going? You wouldn’t believe what happened, my hard drive blew up and I had to get a new one. The pc started acting strange and I was like wtf. At first I though nothing of it but eventually the computer stared running sluggish, I knew something was wrong. I called dell, they had me do a test and it turned out the hard drive went dead. The tech said that I should get more familiar with computers before I do that FTP thing. Did you get my PM? I haven’t seen ya around the boards and figured you probably took a vacation. When the hard drive blew up it also took all my data and pics, it was a nightmare. I can’t find the URL to the website you hooked me up with. I had some stuff stored on it that was not really important but important enough to copy back on this pc. Now that I think about it the website you hooked me up with is a blessing because I could always store my DOCS and pictures on it and if for some reason I f#$ up the computer again and have to get a new hard drive, I would always be able to go to my website and copy them to the new PC – I should have though of that in the first place LOL Is there a way that I would be able to load and download stuff to my website without having to download the ftp program? I am a little leery about downloading stuff now since the hard drive blew up. At worst, I can always download the ftp thing again however, that would be the last option, because I’m so illiterate about using computers I’m afraid if I were to download the ftp program that I might accidentally mess up and allow the world and hackers to gain access to my computer. If possible I rather use the php thing instead of the ftp or maybe I’m just being paranoid LOL ![]()

No I don't think I got your PM, when did you send it? The last one that I got from you was on 03-31-2004. As for tech support people, take what they say for a grain of salt, 90% of them don't know their ass from their heads lol. Anyways, go ahead and install a FTP client again, I don't know how that tech support guy could possibly think that a FTP client could mess up your computer, because its not going to. Maybe if you were running an FTP server he would have a point, but you aren't so he doesn't, heh. Also you don't have to worry about people breaking into your system, that would really only be a concern if you were running a FTP server, not a client.
