Default Random Computer Shutdowns!!

Does anyone know the difference between a random computer shutdown from a low/bad power supply from a software related shutdown?

I've read somewhere that when the computer randomly shuts down from a bad/low power suplly the mouse freeze's for a second and the monitor flickers then it shuts down.

did you build your comp urself? It can also shutdown if the fan(s) arent powerful enuf to keep the computer from shuting down from overheating. It could be a virus too.

It could also be a overheating problem. How hot does your system usually run?
Also ive had a problem with a bad power supply. The system doesnt freeze, it just shuts down out of nowhere and refuses to boot up.

I didn't build it. My computer is on 24/7 and it never overheats, when I touch the case it's normal, I even took the cover out one time cuz I thought it was really hot inside but it wasn't, so over heating isn't the problem. I know that there isn't any virus in my comp. And I don't know if the power supply is bad that's why I'm asking the difference between a random shut down from a power supply problem or an OS problem. I already know that my OS is kinda messed up but I can't reinstall it right now.

If the computer is shutting down without going though the normal shutdown process then its probably hardware, either overheating, a bad power supply, or too many devices overloading the power supply would be my guess. When you opened your computer did you take off the heat sink and fan to feel that actual processor? I would download speedfan, which is easy to use and will give you temps if your MB supports it.

i have to go with the CPU.. if it gets to a sertaint point, it shuts down emediately. or maybe you have some kind of wires that are hooked up so they spark ( very unlikely).

I didn't try to take the fan off cuz I didn't think the cpu was a possible cause. Usually cpu errors freeze's the computer and not shut it down. I still think the main two cause is either windows or the power suplly. I'm gonna reformat in a few days and take off 1 hardrive to lessen power use and a ram stick that's always giving me errors because it doesn't match the other one.

If the CPU over heats it will cause the computer to shutdown, this is a good thing because if the computer didn't shutdown the CPU would cook it self and would be destroyed. 9 times out of 10 when computers are shutting down in the manner that you discribed it is caused by overheating, which is why so many people mentioned it.

A low battery supply it will warn you ahead of time... also in Windows I believe it goes into either standby or hibernates... but if it does it tells you, it doesn't just shut down.

A random shutdown outta nowhere is a hardware or software problem.
Also, if it is an OEM computer(not modified), it shouldn't even overheat... my HP laptop is a POS and gets hot as balls(makes my balls really hot, too), but doesn't just go off. And I doubt your computer is shittier than this HP.
