| have any of you heard of that rare occurance of a cd spinning so fast that is shatters inshide your cd drive? well its not a myth, it is increadibly rare but still does happen. and it happened to me last night. so now i sit here with a totally useless cd drive and a copy of Battlefield 1942 missing a disc. i can get a new drive for 50 dollars, and as for the game....well hopefully EA Games will feel my pain and send me a replacement disc.

| CD shattering? Haven't heard of it, but here's a different story. We were playing StarCraft on a friend's old computer. When we put in the CD, the disc shot straight through the reader and ended up getting lodged in the back of the tower. |

| I've shattered cds by throwing them from moving cars, but never by putting them in a CD drive. I'm sure that it didn't just shatter from it spinning too fast. That wouldn't really make a lot of sense. More likely is that another object in the drive hit it at a high rate of speed and the speed of the rotation caused it to shatter. Or something like that. |

| they did this on that MythBusters TV show on the history channel(or was it TLC or the discovery channel).anyways they basically had to damage the cd before hand and even than it wouldnt break all the time.then they hooked it up to a high power motor and they were blowing cds up left and right.they made a gelatin dummy and set it next to the drive to see how dangerous it could be.i tell you what,i wouldnt have wanted to be that dummy,it looked like it was standing next to a shrapnel bomb that exploded. |

| Yeah mythbusters pretty much proved that you would need a drive that was capable of spinning a CD at speeds MUCH higher than any drive can.... I bet that the drive is messed up and the CD is just "stuck" inside. Try removing the drive and opening it up to get your CD out. Is your drive slot-load (like in a car) or does it have a tray? If it has a tray, the tiny little motors that move the tray in and out might have gotten messed up. There are tiny little plastic sprockets that can get off of alignment and cause your drive to get stuck. Somtimes when the drive can't read a CD it starts to spin it at a higher rate. If your drive isn't alligned right inside or somthing I could see how it might get dammaged by a spinning CD and not want to eject the disc and render the drive useless.

| it was a tray drive. my guess is that for whatever reason, the motor jammed and suddenly stopped dead from full speed, causing massive destruction. upon removien and opening the drive, the motor and laser were blown off it's mountings. and the laser was cracked in half. here, take a look at the cd. i swear i scoured everywhere for cd pieces, but this was all i found: |
