vBulletin or phpBB are pretty good boards. Not that hard to setup either. All you need is a hosting company (e.g. www.imhosted.com) that supports PHP and mySQL--not a problem though, just about EVERYONE supports PHP, and mySQL is not always required, but it makes for a much faster site. I've been designing, creating, and making websites for about 10 years now, and have set up plenty of online communities. If you need help setting one up, email me (prolixdesigns@msn.com). And to be honest, a lot of hosting companies (like ImHosted) come with a Control Panel that does all the setup for you, so basically you just click 'Install' and it does it, you do the customization later but you don't have to upload anything or set variables or file write properties (i.e. chmod 755, heh). Oh, and I don't work for ImHosted lol, they are just really cheap, have lots of space, and are pretty reliable.

I'd suggest phpbb, unless you plan on having a huge community site(like 20,000+ members), in which vbulletin would probably be the best.

If this is just gunna be a little side-project or something, I'd say just go with something free. Not ChatArea(they really really blow, even for being free), but ProBoards(<--Click for their site) or something. Very basic, easy-to-use forums. Great way to start off and learn how to administer a board.

Here's one example of something I did with proboards awhile back:
http://ediv.proboards22.com/index.cgi

Doesn't look too shabby, if I may say so myself

Thanks red
I may need a little assistance with the basics.
I never put together a website before so the whole concept is somewhat confusing.
What would be the best way to get started...? Should I register a domain name and then pick a hosting plan? I noticed * im hosted* had Shared Hosting for $8.95 a month as well as Advanced Web Hosting with dedicated servers however, I am not sure which plan to select or understand what all this famous SQL PHP HTML etc signifies. If possible, I would like to own a message board/Website that has all the bells and whistles, such as smile’s, quotes; pm's an online store, polls, averters, email for registered members, and the whole nine yards. One web company wanted $235 a month to maintain/host the website with suchlike features. I ditched the plan because the price was too high also; many people said that I could build a website with all those features for 20 a month Heh. I often wondered how people manage to pay $200 a month for a hobby such as owning a website until someone said advertisers paid for webmasters/ website owners to place their banner ads on a webmasters website as well as to help pay for the monthly bandwidth to run the website.

Al Bundy did it for you! On Married with Children, Al started the "National Organization of Man Against Amazonian Masterhood", or NO MA'AM. Here's who was in it.

Oh, No!
The name is already taken, I THINK.
Upon joining the group an error message appeared saying the page no longer exist. Now, if there is a way to somehow buy the name No MA’ AM and then have it registered in my name, that would give me time to make a few pages and not have to worry about someone else taking the domain name…. I think, all this computer stuff is new to me
