Default What exactly is a web server?

{ I have recently completed migrating Marijuana.Com to a new webserver. Our new server is a dual Xeon 2.4Ghz with 2GB ram and 2 80GB SCSI drives.}

^^^
I had noticed that Rick updated to a new S-E-r-ver and could not help but wonder what a web server is... for instance... When people run/own a website do they put their website on a spare computer, just leave it sitting there, and use it has the host for their website or do they run the website on their home computer plus what is all this famous Duel Xeon SQL PHP mean

So… Is the computer that I am using now capable of being a server? Or would additional software be needed to make it one

You'll need another program to do the webserving stuff. Apache is the most popular, and runs under many different operating systems. I use it myself to test out php scripts. It's pretty big, but with a computer like yours you shouldn't have a problem running it (it runs fine on my computer, and 20 of my kind of computer would probably equal your computer's power).

Also, you should probably keep your web server and your home computer seperate for security reasons (servers are more visible targets for attacks).

to make things slightly more complicated - its not just the machine specs, bandwidth is very important. for example, I used to pay $900/mo for a t1 - then $800, then $600/mo -- and now I totally gave up on that route because a t1 is a mediocre fraction of what I get in terms of bandwidth by having a leased server on a world class network in new york.

if the next question is "what's bandwidth" -- visualize your server as some beverage, and your visitors trying to drink through a straw of variable size. the bigger the straw the more they get faster ----- bandwidth, the size of the pipe to the internet... most cable connections are 3mb downloading, 256 kb uploading (large difference)... a T1 is usually 1.544 up and ~1.544mb down (3.2 total).... vs the bigger lines like I'm on -- 45mb to 133mb....huge difference... it's VERY noticable if a server is on a low bandwidth connection

hope thats low on geekspeak
