| Ok here is the story. I was browsing the internet and found a website that required a JAVA plug in order to view cretin images that were on the website. I have always been skeptical about downloading Java plug INS because I herd Java was risky and contained scripts that could not be trusted, something to that effect. I really wanted to scope out this website so I downloaded Sun Java. After downloading the java plug in my computer started acting strange. When attempting to open a webpage I would get numerous time out errors, When I open Microsoft word the load time takes forever to load and when it dose load everything, is well, slow. I also noticed that my hard drive was suddenly cluttered up with fragments. Therefore, I defragged the hard drive and it took over 2 hours to defrag, defragging did no good. Now when I open Microsoft Word an message comes up saying to enter the windows OS disc. I inserted the disk but do not know what option to choose, the message did not inform me either. I scanned for viruses and found none. I restored the system and things are running a tad bit smother, but not much. I have a feeling it might be the hard drive, not sure though. Dose anyone have any suggestion or tips that would help this issue any help info and tips will be appreciated. |

| First of all, the Java Run Environment (I assume that's what you got) is ****ing huge. It's gigantic. So that could be one reason why your computer got slower. It was just too big for it. I don't know much about defragging, but I'm sure that psychological does... Smart idea to run the system restore. Why is it only running a tad bit smoother? The java thing shouldn't have given you viruses or anything like that, so maybe the site had something to do with it. Edit: Nevermind, Java isn't that big. I was looking at the Development thing that I have. I still stand by my theory that it just slowed your computer down a lot. |

| Post the link to the site so that we can see what the deal with it is. Defragging probably wouldn't help you in this case, and neither would system restore, unless system files got corrupted somehow. It's possible that you were duped in downloading something malicious that is sucking up system resources as well, or it could just be plug-in doing it. You also might want to post a hijack this log, in order to see if there is something else slowing down your system. Get hijack this here http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe.

| What program did you use to scan for virus? I got a damn javascript virus last night but AVG took care of it real fast.

| I'm probally going to be wrong here, but check in your system tray (the thing next to the clock) and see if there is a cup of coffe down there, right click it and it exit. I think that this will do the trick, but I'm not sure, becuase I've never seen java do something like this. |

| If you suspect its a virus update your definitions if that dont help try any of these: 2.As said allready system restore from prior date should do the trick as well 3.Control panel ->add/remove programs , remove the prog you installed 4.(getting in depth)To possibly see whats using the resources hit ALT+CTRL+DEL once, click the processes tab and look under the column "CPU" it will show a % of how much processing power each program is using and under the "mem usage" column it shows how much ram each prog is taking up if anything is unusaly high and you are certain its not windows related copy down the prog name....terminate it and do a search for it..... if its in a secluded folder and the .exe looks like spyware click properties on the prog (by right clicking) see when it was added to your system....if it was that day you suspect you got these problems delete it....go to START->RUN type "msconfig" and then go to the "startup" tab, if the program is listed there uncheck and apply, if not do a search for the prog name in the registry, if its under a path like HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run delete the key that makes it run on startup....

| This is a trip I use Norton Anti Virus as well as this DSL MODEM/ROUTER (which has a kick ass firewall) to monitor suspicious activity such as viruses and spy ware. I have feeling that as I type this message the CPU is being tortured from to many running processes at once. When I Press CRT ALT Delete the CPU usage says 0% to 10% and PF use says 192 mb when I look under running processes it displays 30 programs as currently running. MS CONFIG displays 7 items cheeked (all used by Norton and pest patrol) Under Windows task managers > physical memory total 1047564> available 751648 / commit charge 195/2462m Page file usage history has a straight yellow line running straight at the bottom of the display O yeah I am using both firewall > the one on the modem and also the built in firewall that comes with win xppro Here is the link for pest patrol www.pestpatrol.com Modem mafacture http://www.2wire.com/ model #1000HW I have a strong feeling that the java program flooded the PC with large amounts of fragments or bugged the pc on porous to allow a bunch of unnecessary files to clog up the system O the java was that…… sun java, the one with the coffee cup I’d link the site but getting to many time out errors Here are the specs of the computer 0R788 Processor, 80532, 2.53G, 512K, 533FSB, Software Kogyo 1 1P460 Assembly, Card (Circuit), Planar (Motherboard), 850E, DIM8200 1 6H257 Keyboard, 104, 6P, United States, Audio, NMB, Midnight Gray 1 735HE Mouse, Personal System 2, 6P, 2BTN, Wheel, 1.3A, MICROSOFT, Midnight Gray 1 6M479 Digital Video Disk Drive, DVD+RW, 4.7G, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), PHPS-CP, Revision, Chassis 2001 1 9K689 Kit, Compact Diskette, Compact Disk Read Write, Roxio, V5.1E4 1 5740C Cable, Auxiliary, Internal, Modem, 4C 1 8F217 Modem, V.92, Internal, Data/Fax/Voice, SOFT, Zinc, Dimension 1 611WY Compact Disk Drive, 128K, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 5.25" Form Factor, 20/48X, LTN-486, Chassis 2001 1 38FRH Card (Circuit), Multi-Media, Audio, SANTA CRUZ 1 7E840 Kit, Speaker, 120V, HK395, Samsung, Dell Americas Organization 1 4N458 Card (Circuit), GRPHC, 128MB, NV25, Dimension 1 8G152 Display, Flat Panel Display, 17, Dual, 1702FP, Midnight Gray, Dell Americas Organization 1 2D067 Floppy Drive, 1.44M, 3.5" Form Factor, 3MD, No Bezel, SONY, Chassis 2001, W3 1 2J531 Kit, Compact Diskette, Driver, MGI, 1394 1 6D906 Card (Circuit), Controller, 1394A, PC Interface, Loop, TI/SCI 1 9J418 Removable Media Storage, Zip Drive, 250M, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 3.5" Form Factor, IOMEGA, Chassis 2001, HCT 1 8J598 Kit, Software, Norton Antivirus 2002, 5.25" Form Factor, England/English, Retail 1 0J568 Kit, Software, MS-MNY-2K2, Original Equipment Mfgr., England/English 1 0E784 Kit, Software, OFCXPSB, England/English, Original Equipment Mfgr. 1 8P472 Kit, Software, OFCXP-SP1, England/English 1 8K233 Kit, Software, Overpack, Windows XP pro, Compact Diskette w/Documentation, England/English, A01 1 7R416 Card (Circuit), Network, Ethernet, PC Interface, 10/100, MDP 1 8R080 Kit, DOC/DSK, Software, Digital Video Disk Drive, CYBERLINK, 4.0, 2CH 1 2K222 Hard Drive, 120G, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), 1N, 7.2K, WD-XL40 4 4T235 Rambus Inline Memory Module, 256, 400M, 128X16, 8C, 40 1 44FCJ Printer/Printer Accessories, Cable, USBD4B-10, Light Dimension 8200 Series, Intel Pentium 4,Processor,at 2.53GHz 1024MB PC800 RDRAM 17 in (17.0 in viewable) 1702FP Digital Flat PaneDisplay 128MB DDR NVidia GeForce4 TI 4600 Graphics Card with TV-OUT and DVI Dell Edition 120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with Data,Burst Cache,Tied 3.5in Floppy Drive Dell Application Back-up CD, Factory Install Intel Pro 100 PCI Ethernet Network Card 56K PCI Telephony Modem for Windows 48X Max Variable CD-ROM Drive Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP, Sound Card Harmon Kardon HK-395 Speakers 50MB Iomega Zip Built-In Drive DVD+RW/ CD-RW Combination Drive Digital Content Authoring Software Cyberlink Software Decoding for DVD Drives |

| I think your problem is that you installed the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) directly over the MRE (Microsoft Runtime Environment). Instead you should have uninstalled the MRE then installed the JRE. I might be way off base though. I'd just do a system restore. |

| sounds like a virus/worm messed with your system a little (or possibly spyware). an AV program is NOT guaranteed protection against virii/worms, as some can disable or uninstall your AV, or just add themselves to the "exception" list so theyre never scanned. d/l spybot: search and destroy AND Ad-Aware no more spyware problems ![]() |
