I'd like to get a high-speed internet connection, mainly so I can play x-box online. What would be a better service for that, cable or DSL? Or are they the same thing and I'm just a complete and total moron?

Also, any other things I should know about playing on x-box live, before I start spending money and signing contracts?

Any help will be much appreciated

This is going to be about as far from a "technical' answer as you can get, but I'll give it a shot. All I can do is compare similiar computers, one hooked up to DSl, and the other to cable. I personally have cable, and I love it. My buddy, though, has DSL, and it seems relatively slow. I think my particular cable modem runs about 1Mbps, while his DSl runs at 256k. When surfing anything graphics intensive (ala porn) cable blows his DSl out of the water. Both seem to work well for X-box, at least according to him (I've only played on cable, not his DSL connection)

Ok, X-box live.....first of all, try the free 2 month subscription that comes with many live-compatible games. Even if it claims to be 'expired" it will work. I've only had it less than a week, but I'm addicted. Prepare to shirk all responsibilites for a few days (weeks, months.....years?). You also need either a credit or debit card in order to sign on, even with a free trial. This is so they can charge you once your trial runs out.....your choice of 7.95 monthly, or 50 bucks a year. Once you try it, you'll see why thats actually a good deal.....well woth it in my opinion.

Once you get online, lemmee know......i'm always up for getting my ass kicked in halo2

Cable is much faster then DSL, but also pricier. The choise is yours.

However, I wouldn't run Xbox live on DSL.... I think it would get REALLY laggy sometimes.....

DSL is nothing more than some glorified dial up.
Cable can become a problem in congested traffic areas, like large apartment complexes, where most apartments have cable modems. This however isn't usually a problem.

Dsl can be just as quick as cable, it all depends on the package you purchase, and how heavily you plan on saturating your bandwidth.

Cable would be the better choice for X-box live because there would be less lag. Lag is a pretty big problem in some of the games and is annoying as **** when you're playing Halo 2.

If you're planning on getting X-box live then you should do as TM said and get a 2-month free somehow. All you need to sign up for it (2-month free or a year subscription) is a credit card, an X-box, and a place to plug that **** in.

ok i doubt this will happen to any one else for xbox live but i bought my friend the 3 month subscription to xbox live last year and since then his fathers credit card has not been charged one cent... he even made a second account on the same credit card... and it still has not been charged. u might be as lucky but dont count on it... i just felt like sharing that, because its pretty funny.

We have had both DSL and a cable modem. Tried the DSL first and it sucked. Got the cable modem and have never went back.

When you bought the 3-month subscription it is all paid for right there. The only reason for a credit card is so that if the three months expires and you haven't cancelled then it will charge the credit card for a new subsription. When you said he made a new account, if he bought another thing from the store, then the same explanation applies. However, if he just continued with his old account and still didn't get charged, then I agree that he got lucky.

The card won't be charged until the subscription is over....it renews automatically. And Fiend is right....lagging on Halo sucks.....makes me want to play sniper for real instead of on the game.....

Don't know if it's the same in America, but in Australia it's dependant upon a few things.
Cable is generally a shared thing, the speed is based upon how many people are running an internet connection off that cable, so say if theres 10 people in your street using one cable, it's obviously going to be a lot slower than if 1 person was. DSL runs independently, and you will usually get a fairly steady speed all the time, but it is a lot slower than if you get maximum speed on cable. Highest speed I've gotton on my DSL is downloading at around 400kb/s and thats with a 12MB connection, and someone with cable I've seen download at 700kb/s.
So do a little research first, find out whats going to benefit you most.
