If you have had the computer for a while it would be best to do a clean install if you have the time, just makes everything faster. I don't think dell gives you a real version of xp, w/o all the crap on it though. If you have a full xp version use it if not borrow one or pirate it. It might come with it though, my alienware did.

Bit Torrent would be fine. If you can borrow a CD that is easier though

Try this. I'm not sure if this will do the trick or not, but the problem is a driver. I know what you're talking about with the volume display. I have a desktop computer that I am using a Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard with and when I press the volume up and down on the keyboard, it displays in the bottom right corner of the screen...then slowly fades away. This started appearing when I first installed the keyboard on the system, so I know it was the Microsoft keyboard driver that installed it for me. I'm guessing that it would be a driver of some sort for you, but the driver page for the 600m(here) doesn't list a keyboard driver. You might try the audio driver also...it couldn't hurt. If you still can't get it, try the Dell Notebook System Software under System and Configuration Utilities. That's a long shot, but it's my last guess. Good luck.
