I'd say Dell but I'm not sure what you would be using it for and how much you would be spending. I like Sony most of all though.

Gateway has been crap since the Pentium II came out.

Dell laptops are good stuff. Probably the best.

Dell laptops might be the best value, but they definitely aren't the best, at least in my opinion.

To the OP I like gateway better, seem a little more solid, but you will pay a little, maybe even a good amount more for a comp with the same specs. So unless the cost doesn't matter too much to you, a dell would probably be a better choice. I like sonys too, very nice feel to them, they have my favorite keyboards. And no matter what you buy, once you get it, do a clean install of xp, they all come with a bunch of crap on them which slow them down. If it comes with a regular xp disk do it from that, if it comes with a disk from the company either do it off your own disk or pirate the real version or you will just reinstall all that crap. A few small companies install only the real xp, like my alienware did, saves a little time.

If you aren't in a rush you could wait until vista in January, but whatever kind you buy I would def. go with core 2 duo, and at least 1 gig of ram.

Good luck man, getting a new computer is such a great feeling, it always seems so fast.

It's out for businesses, along with office 07. The consumer version hits late January and will start shipping with new computers then too. Honestly I was thinking waiting would save him the cost of the upgrade, unless he plans to pirate it. can't really tell if it is much better yet, I was to lazy to download rc2. Some manufacturers are letting you buy a comp with xp now, and will send you vista free on Jan 30th. I know alienware is doing that.
