Ad-aware and Spybot are decent programs for on-demand scanning, but the have a few problems now that they've been on the net for a few years- specifically, there is malware out there that specifically targets them. I've run into it before on some friends' systems I was running diagnostic on.

I would recommend Ewido (Now AVG Anti-Spyware, but the site's still Ewido). Blows any other freeware program I've use out of the water, and works against more types of malware than spybot and ad-aware (like trojans and worms!). Because it scans deeper than the other two, it usually also turns up a few spyware programs the others missed. Additionally, it has better preventative capabilites than either of the other two. Only problem is is that it's a trial version (at least it was while still Ewido- might be different now that it's AVG, haven't downloaded and installed the new one yet), and after 14 days, it deactivates the bonus preventative stuff and only runs as an on-demand scanner and remover. If you uninstall and reinstall it, though, you get the full package again.

I also recommend Blacklight, which will pick up and uninstall rootkits. Rootkits are programs that hide and disguise other malware, such as trojans. While Ewido gets most of that, it never hurts to have a little extra kick.

It's best though to have a layered defense- Ewido combined with the other two would work fairly well, although I only use Ewido of the three- I have commercial software that's super tight. With a set-up of Ewido, Blacklight, and Avast! for anti-virus, I've been able to fix computers that've not only been running slowly, but randomly crashing and, in one case, had lost their internet because the provider picked up an outgoing malicious response. Their great programs...

i wish i knew this years ago. i had a pc only one i had then and it was literaly crashing like every other week sometimes sooner and i had to reinstall windows everytime and it did this till the day i got fed up with it and pulled it out from under the desk pluged in and on and hurled it across the room letting it smash into the concrete floor and leaving it for like 3 hours. surprisingly when i put it back and turned it back on it still worked to my amazement and it dident crash again for 2 months then i got a new pc

Yeah, it's a good set-up. The real killer though, as much as I like Ewido, is Avast!, because it has a feature that let's you run a scan before windows is loaded at all- ad-aware and spybot have an "on boot" option, but it only takes effect once you sign in, so things could have already loaded. Not so with Avast!. I highly recommend it for an anti-virus if you don't already have a good one. But remember! Only have one anti-virus on at one time! If you don't, they interfere with each other and don't work!

It's a shame about Ewido's trial period- it really is the best freeware, and it's definitely worth its price, but I'm too cheap to spend my own money on something like that, and already have the commercial versions of Ad-Aware (with Ad-Watch, which makes a HUGE difference) and Spysweeper... so I generally only use it to nuke malware on other people's computers.

(And sorry I keep calling AVG Ewido... I just started using it when it was still Ewido and it's how I always think of it).
