Well I got the c++ for dummies book and I don't know where to start.

Im confused because it tells you to create a consol application and it says in the new project dialog box,click the console application found in the basic tab.
Make sure that the c++ project radio button in the lower-right area is selected.If it isn't, then select ut and select the make default language checkbox.

I don't know where to get that

It sounds like they want you to use a specific IDE for that, which you apparently do not have. I do all my programming in a simple text editor, so I can't really help you.

C++ is a programming language.

I'm sorry, but C++ for Dummies is not a very good place to start. If at all possible return the book ASAP and buy http://www.amazon.com/dp/0321246950?...SIN=0321246950 (C++ Without Fear). This is a great book which assumes you have absolutely no previous knowledge of programming and comes with a free compiler. Untill then use this website - http://www.cprogramming.com/
This site worked great for me, although I did have some roots in Java before I began C++. If you're very serious about programming and are having trouble getting started try using a simpler language such as perl, that way you can focus more on actual programming, rather than having to learn the hows and whys of programming right off the bat.

yeah dude dont go through all that, just go to the first tab and the text file on the bottom of the list, then once its oppened just go save ur file with .cpp, then u will be good
