It really depends ont eh CPU and how much load it's under.
The cooling for the CPU also plays a factor.

Typically, around 100-120 degrees F

If it has always run hot and is stable it doesn't matter. Not sure about cpu's but gpu's don't reach the danger point until around 105 c, probably around the same for cpu's. Have you cleaned out your case recently, cause dust could easily raise the temp like 10 c.

Yeah, this depends a lot on the processor you're using. There's a variability of about 40 degrees depending on your processor type. Core 2 runs best <60C, some go up to 90-100C.

Ok....my cpu seems to be running at about 30 degrees C, and the fan seems to be constantly running to the point of being annoying. Can I safely raise the temp at which the fan kicks on?

trouble,

What kind of motherboard do you have? Some have this option built into the BIOS like ABIT and ASUS(and others), while others have a utility that runs through Windows...and some have both.

I'd go to the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard. Look for your model and they'll probably have a good bit of downloads.

Safe CPU temps vary depending upon CPU type.

Overclocking is never worth it.
