| My dad gave me one not too long ago, no installation software or anything, it powers up and opens and closes, but my computer doesn't recognize it and i can't find it on device manager. Any ideas? |

| Fiorst of all, an optical drive doesn't need drivers. You would, however, need some software and/or codecs to play DVD movies on it. I'd check the jumper setting on the drive, and any other device on the same IDE cable. You should have both set to CS (Cable Select) or one set to MASTER and one set to SLAVE. Personally, I never go with CS. I always use Master/Slave.

| Yeah, jumpers would explain why it doesn't register. To save you the time of having to boot into Windows to check if it's done right all the time, go into your BIOS when your computer starts up (Del or F2 depending on your system). The BIOS should register the drive model. |
