| I haven't updated my rig in almost a year, and that was just throwing in a replacement for my old video card after it got toasted (I had a 6800 vanilla), so it isn't the rig it once was... in fact it's probably "weak" by todays standards. Asus A8N5X AMD 3500+ (clawhammer core... do they even make it anymore :P ) Biostar 7600GT Thermaltake Xaser III 560w 1GB (2x 512MB) Corsair XMS Maxtor 250GB w/ 16MB cache 52x CD burner 16x DVd burner dvd/cd ROM drive Raidmax Saggita case cooled by a gigabyte 3d hs/f, 1x 120mm fan, 2x 80mm fans. The gigabyte 3d dates back to my overclocking days... I had my 3500 running at 2.8, my RAM timings tightened up to like 3-3-3-5 I think, and my 6800 vanilla was unlocked and OC'd (obviously). But then... something happened (still not sure what), and everything just crashed around my ears. The 6800 was totally toasted, my 3500 runs OK now at stock speeds but runs a few degrees hotter. My RAM was fine but I loosened it up to stock timings and voltage, and now I've got my 7600GT running stock (no point in OCing that). Unfortunetly i came out of that encounter with a corrupted windows. Still haven't reinstalled... At least it looks nice, and it still runs everything i need it to (CS:S, oblivion, eetc.). I do need a revamping, i'm looking at 2x 1GB sticks of XMS (i've had too good of an experience with it to change), maybe a 4 series dual core, and possibly a better video card. I realllly need another harddrive though... mine has 40GBs left, I can't download anything anymore I had to delete a lottt of stuff too.

| It really depends on what the machine is for. For some, having a nice burner is great for movies, etc. It certainly is useful for me, so clearly it has some importance. If all you do is play games, and don't care about being able to burn, then yes, a cheap, slow CD-ROM drive will suffice. This however, is certainly not the only use for computers these days.... |
