| I use hibernation on my XP notebook. You do have to press the on/off button (briefly) to resume. It looks like normal start up at first, then you see 'resuming windows'. So it's not nearly as quick as coming off the screen saver, but it does put my session back where it was. I do know that setting hibernation can be tricky. I think you can have some power settings that may conflict with the hibernation mode, but in my case it's just prevented the thing from going into hibernation. I haven't had any trouble coming out of it. Sorry if this info is not helpful to you. That's all I've got without more details.

| The point of hibernation is to conserve all the data on the RAM when the computer is powered off to avoid situations where low power cutoff won't result in losing work (i.e. low laptop battery) or other cases where you really don't want to lose data but need to power off the computer for some reason. It's not the same as S3 standby where the computer is still running--you need to turn the computer back on. |

| If hibernation isn't working properly, something is wrong with your computer. All of my computers use hibernate as compared to powering down, since it's the more logical choice in my view. Have you recently installed any programs that are from non-commercial sources, or any freeware? EDIT: Yeah, in order to recover into the OS from hibernating you need to press your power button again, and it does appear to be a normal boot, but it should resume from Windows.

Hibernbation writes the system state to the hard drive, not to RAM. Once the state is written to the HDD, the entire PC powers off. When the power button is pressed, it restores the system state from the file onthe HDD. The file it writes is HIBERFILE.SYS on the root of the system drive. S1 & S3 Standby write system state to RAM. It does NOT shut down the PC, as the PC requires power to maintain the contents of RAM. The difference between S1 and S3 Standby is what other devices (fans & USB ports mainly) get powered while int he standby state. Now, if resuming from hibernation is giving you issues, Here are a fuew suggestions: 1 - Make certain you have free space on the system drive that is AT LEAST twice the amount of RAM in the computer. If you have 512MB RAM, you should have at least 1GB of free space on the HDD. 2 - When you hibernate, have as few programs running as possible. If you have a wireless network connection, disable it. If you're connected to devices via bluetooth, kill those connections. They all can cause hibernation to hang. 3 - Do a CHKDSK and a Defrag of your HDD, preferrably in Safe Mode. 4 - Make certain that hibernation is enabled in the BIOS Setup, Power Options Control Panel. Optionally, you can set the PC to hibernate when the power button is pressed (this is how I have the PC in my truck configured) or the lid is closed on a laptop. Many laptops also have the option to go to Standby after XX minutes, and then Hibernation XX minutes after that. 5 - Do a full sweep for viruses (virii?) and spyware. They can and will leave processes running that interfere with hibernation.

| Actually, I do know that all data is saved to the HDD from the RAM, even though seeing that now the writing was questionable. |
