Finally, I got an ipod. But it took me a while to find an avi to mp4 conversion program that works (and doesn't output upside down or without sound!)

The one I found that actually works is called: "Jodix Free ipod video converter"

I use to have this really cool website where you could upload YouTube videos and it would convert into a video format you can use on your iPod or Zune, then download it.... I wish I still had it because I would use it, maybe it'll come to me.

There are several such services; like Movavi Online Video Converter

The problem with these is that there are usually size limitations, therefore they are not useful for full size movies. Also, the end user has no control over specifics, other than the output format. Finally, I have often experienced a loss of audio/video synchronization as well as a dramatic decrease in the quality of the clip.

If you want control, and good quality, better to wait for your own computer to do the converting. If you just don't care, the online services are certainly faster than my aging Mac Mini, not sure what hardware you're on.

Well my computer could easily run just about anything, but how do you go about getting YouTube videos on your actual computer?

I've never actually tried to put a full movie on my Zune but I just might have to considering how many I have recently 'acquired'.

What programs might you recommend for a do-it-all-in-one deal? Downloading youtube videos, converting avi files to go on my Zune etc.

Well, there is a Firefox plug-in for that https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3590.
From there, since they are usually short on YouTube, online conversion would work, or use any other video converter. I've yet to see a program that will capture a video off the web and convert it, although such a thing may exist.

Has anyone ever converted a video where the output is upside down and/or without sound?

I'm wondering if it's the original avi file or the conversion program that makes it fuck up.

If you use iTunes to convert muxed videos (muxed video means the audio and video are on the same track), the converted videos will lose sound. You can learn more about the problem from apple official document
iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files
