Decided I'd post a thread where people can put up pics of crazy things involving science and nature. I'll start it off with a crystal cavern image before I fall asleep on my keyboard and start drooling. I'd find a better one but my mind has eroded for the night from studying C++.

    Of course obey forum rules.

Edit: This is a close up picture of the surface of our star.

The surface tension of water supports a metal paperclip. By photographing it using a grille in front of the light source, the deformation of the water around the clip can be seen.

    Pretty trippy, Rich :D.

This one is well worn, I know, but it's still pretty crazy. This is a nuclear weapon detonation after around 20 milliseconds.

Here is a Giant Isopod. They live mainly in deep, cold ocean beds and are scavengers. They're cousins to the pill bugs you can find in your backyard under stones. (Pill bugs are actually crustaceans, if you didn't know.)

Cancer cells can spread through the body in a process known as metastasis. This cancer cell is moving down a pore in a filter. The image was taken at Cancer Research UK, where the spread of cancer is studied in the hope of finding a cure. (©Anne Weston )

This is the victim of the parasitic fungus Hirsutella. The spores will land on the ant, begin to grow inside of it and eventually make interface with the ants brain. It will then control the ant to climb up branches, lock its jaws in to the wood and erupt from the ants body to release more spores.

Many similar species of fungus target ants like this. Makes you wonder whats waiting for us out there.

I know this is a photo thread, but I had to include the link of this fungus in action. Check it out here. Reminds me of the flood or something from Halo. Valid YouTube URL required

Obvoiusly the northern lights seen from space.

They are caused by the sun ejecting particals from itself out into space (solar wind). When these particals hit our atmosphere, they accelerate to extremely high velocities and burn up before hitting earth.

"when you see differenet colours; that is partical interaction at differenet hights"

Northern lights are also seen on another planet:

    Space is always cool dude.

Here are some of the largest flowers on Earth. Interestingly, all of them smell like crap. I tried to find ones with people near them for size references, but more vibrant images can be found around the net.

Some very very "relative" sizes of some planets and stars.

EDIT: Guru Already posted all these images on the "Philosophy" Board
    http://www.marijuana.com/philosophy/96410-what-death-10.html

But Guru has them in "Link" format while I made them..... not in link format....... >.>

And to show how small our star really is; Or how big it is going to get...

    AND!

The white words say (from left to right): "Jupiter is invisible at this scale" and the little invisible dot beside Sirius (The small white dot) is our sun. :)

Unno if this is common knowledge but... Our sun is a "normal" star, almost in it's infancy, Arcturus and Pollux would be part of our "category"; Sirius and Rigel is known as a "White dwarf star" (After supernova the sun either collapses into a black hole, or becomes a white dwarf); The rest of the stars Betelgeuse, and Antares are known as "Super Giants" and Aldebaran is known as a "Red Giant"; Stars grow in size, immensely, before performing a supernova.

This is an image of Earth as viewed by the Voyager I probe in 1990 at a distance of roughly 3.7 billion miles/6 billion kilometers away. The image they received from the probe only took a space of 0.12 pixels. Carl Sagan had pushed for NASA to take this photo as the probe moves still to this day away from our star system and somewhat emphasized it in his book Pale Blue Dot.

I find it a very humbling and beautiful photo. It isn't flashy, but...just look at it.

And, of course, more fungi for your viewing pleasure. Many species of mushrooms have a electroluminescent ability. I'm unfamiliar with the species of this one. I wonder what it tastes like?
