WORLD: Redwood Toxicology Laboratory Announces Urine Test for Marijuana Mimics: Synthetic Cannabinoids JWH-018 and JWH-073 Metabolites
    MarketWatch / 07/12/2010 / Press Release

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Jul 12, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Redwood Toxicology Laboratory, Inc. (RTL) announced today it now offers lab-based testing for the detection of JWH-018 and JWH-073 metabolites in urine. JWH-018 and JWH-073 are the primary synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists responsible for the euphoric and psychoactive affects that imitate marijuana and are among the numerous compounds found in "herbal" incense or smoke blends.

RTL laboratory analysis confirmed JWH-018 and JWH-073 as the active ingredients in 27 herbal mixtures, and established test methods to identify the presence of their metabolites.

JWH-compounds bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and were initially developed as therapeutic agents for the treatment of pain. However, these psychoactive research chemicals are now being sprayed on herbal material and sold as "fake weed" or "synthetic marijuana." Users looking for a "legal high" often turn to popular herbal smoking products marketed under brand names such as K2, K3, Spice, Genie, Smoke, Pot-pourri, Buzz, Pulse, Hush, Mystery, Earthquake, Ocean Blue, Stinger, Serenity and many others.

Today, herbal blends containing the JWH-compounds are banned in several states and by the U.S. armed forces. Legal restrictions on these compounds are likely to be imposed nationwide. Nevertheless, they are still readily available via the Internet and in many "head-shops" around the country. There have been many reports about the adverse effects of these chemicals including agitation, rapid heart rate, confusion, dizziness and nausea. In fact, the American Association of Poison Control Centers issued a warning about the dangers of synthetic marijuana products in March 2010.

"We have received numerous requests from our clients for a K2 and Spice drug test," said Albert Berger, General Manager, RTL. "We are pleased that our laboratory research team was able to quickly develop an accurate test that met our clients needs and concerns. To our knowledge, RTL may be the only laboratory in the world to offer the metabolite test for these compounds."

RTL's test will utilize the most sophisticated, sensitive and specific equipment and technology available, LC/MS/MS (liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry) to confirm JWH-018 and JWH-073 metabolites. This test methodology provides the most definitive synthetic cannabinoid biomarker test results.

"Developing a urine test for JWH-018 and JWH-073 was very challenging," said Sumandeep Rana, Scientific Director, RTL. "Since parent compounds are not usually found in urine, we had to identify the metabolites, and the detection method relies on monitoring multiple metabolites for each of these compounds. If you only look for the parent drug in urine, you will have a lot of false negatives. The accuracy of this test could have a real impact on the drug testing industry."

Both Berger and Rana emphasized that the new RTL test panel is well suited for a variety of settings that have prevalent access to "fake marijuana." The test will be ideal for a number of criminal situations including drug courts, probation and parole. It will also help limit teen drug abuse, workplace liability, and facilitate addiction treatment monitoring--all at a very attractive cost to administrators.

(MMNote: This will be the only news article I post relating to Spice products. While many who smoke K2 will be able to finish out the next few months of their probation or drug courts, the ones that are still looking at a year or two WILL be subject to these tests once the finances are worked out.

I wanted to post this article to inform the ones that may not find out until it's too late that it IS possible to fail a drug test for this now, quit while your ahead.)

And the beat rolls on. I wonder if the metabolites from the synthetic remain in your system as long as the ones from cannabis do? Did not notice it in the article.

"There's an immense divide between the practice of assailing those who disagree with your stance with your standard puerile propagandistic monoconceptual drivel, personal attacks and typical anecdotal testimonials provided by those such as yourself, versus intelligent insights derived through historically factual evidence and facts garnered through the use of the scientifically accepted methods of investigation." is it testing for all jwhs? or just 018 and 073?
Also - this would only be used where it is

We shall see, huh? Ya can't be busted for Poss. yet, but does the test show K2 or herb? We should be asking ourselves how stupid are we are to keep herb illegal........

A bunch of stupid Americans who let someone else make their decisions for them...........

I'm not sure, probably just 018 and 073 because they show up the most in the blends being sold across the country. I could see probations using it in specific cases until (or even if) it becomes another panel on a drug test. I know someone who couldn't get in trouble with his probation because K2s legal status gives him a loophole in his contract.

I know of another friend who agreed in his contract not to use ANY chemical or product to achieve a level of intoxication. So say they tested him and he failed, Violation of Probation right there.

I wonder how long you have until you're system is clean? This should be more evidence why real herb should be legal see how bad people want it look at the lengths gone to get it. New York currently has a law in legislation to make JWH in all it's forms illegal + and no medical herb = bunch of dicks

I've read that the window of detection for these synthetic cannabinoids like the jwh series, are far smaller than that for the detection of THC metabolites. According to Redwood toxicology group, using their detection methods of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry, they can detect metabolites within a window of only 72 hours after ingestion, depending on how much is ingested of course.

The developers of this newly designed test from Redwood Toxicology Laboratory commented:

"Developing a urine test for JWH-018 and JWH-073 was very challenging,” said Sumandeep Rana, Scientific Director, RTL. “Since parent compounds are not usually found in urine, we had to identify the metabolites, and the detection method relies on monitoring multiple metabolites for each of these compounds. If you only look for the parent drug in urine, you will have a lot of false negatives. The accuracy of this test could have a real impact on the drug testing industry.”

I'm sure it's possible for them to develop tests that could increase the window of detection to several weeks, but I don't think the technology has advanced that far yet, so they're playing it safe with this 72 hour drug test for now.

That is the same window of time for the new hi-tech marijuana use detector from Philips used on saliva. What we don't know is if the machine shows a level of impairment or pinpoints elapsed time since ingestion,a necessary bit of info
if they are going to use the marijuana detector to prosecute drugged driving or working while impaired.
