Can anyone tell me if urine screening goes in my permanent medical records with my own physician? I am a chronic pain patient (arthritis) and have been smoking 1-2x a week lately in addition to my doctor prescribed pain meds. I told the employer about the pain meds, I will probably have to provide a note from my doctor. But if I test positive for the other....I don't want that to mess up my relationship with my doctor. I'd rather miss out on this job if I have to. Help! Brit

No, for pre-employment testing, a physician will call you to determine if prescription medications are interfering with your drug test. For example, you test positive for amphetamines, and have a legal prescription for ritalin (sp?). You can present your prescription, physican name and ph.#, prescribed amount, last time you took the medication and dosage last taken. For marijuana, there is no medical prescription available. If an MRO calls you to ask about any prescription medications, the first thing you should ask the MRO is what substance is this in reference to? IF he says: Marijuana, or THC, then you should just say "oh", and go through the motions. Do not give your physicians name or number to the MRO because anything that MRO says to your physician, can become part of your medical record. IF you are popping positive for a prescription pain medication such as opium, then by all means, you have a legal prescription taken in a legal manner. Give your prescription and physician name and number to the MRO. Never bring a list of medications to the employer or the collection facility. They are not the MRO and can do nothing to determine if you are taking the prescription legally or not.

Thank you so much for the responses, I truly appreciate it. I will definitely ask first what they are referring to before I volunteer my MD's name or number. I was so afraid this would be the case. Now all I can do is pray my test turns out ok, although I doubt it, since I did a home test first and it was positive. Sigh. My spouse was insistent that I try...hard economic times, I have to keep trying to get a job. Rest assured from now on it will be on smoke free terms! ![]() I tried and tried to find the answer to this question on this board or elsewhere on the web before I posted the question. Since I just discovered this board, I did not want to be an irritant. I think I read that the lab (LabCorp) keeps it in their records for a year...? Now I will be afraid to test at LabCorp for another job in the coming weeks. Am I just being paranoid? Brit

Laboratories do keep records for a year of positive results, but they do not compare one specimen to another at all. For example, say an employer uses a SSN as an ID number for a donor. Another employer uses an employee number or driving license number for an ID number on the CCF. There would be no way that the laboratory could compare one with the other. Many people have the same name. One identifyer is not enough to match up a donor with a previous donor. They do not compare donors results with a previous result. at all. Don't worry.
