You will be evaluated by a SAP (Substance Abuse Professional). This SAP will set a course for your counseling, whether it is classes, one-on-one counseling, group sessions, Narcotics Anonymous, or in-patient treatment by another provider. Once you have completed the prescribed treatment/counseling, the SAP will then re-evaluate you to see if you have completed the treatment/counseling satisfactorily or not. If you have, then you need to take (and pass) a Return-to-duty test. You can then go back to work in your safety sensitive job. You will then be subject to AT LEAST 6 Follow-up tests in the next calendar year. Follow-up testing can continue for up to 5 years (although it rarely goes on for more than one year). All DOT Return-to-duty and Follow-up testing after November 1, 2008 will be observed. (was scheduled to begin observed testing on August 25th, 2008; but that has been delayed to allow for public comments on the new ruling).

If he failed a DOT test, he is required to disclose that to any new employer if he is applying for another safety sensitive position.

I used to drive a truck with a DOT regulated carrier. Sec is 100% on the mark. In fact if you were to go to another employer any info you give will be cross-checked with all state DOT's and the feds. Sec you really are the SUPER MODERATOR!
