A dear friend of mine is up for a job at Owens and Minor. The company is based in Virginia, but she will be working in a Midwest office. She hasn't smoked in over 30 days. She will be required to take a drug test before the end of October, however, a rumor is sweeping her office that O&M does hair testing, in which case, she's cooked.

I called O&M HQ and asked the receptionist if the company does pre-employ drug screens. She said yes. I asked if it was hair or urine. She said it depended on the position. I asked if hair testing was for safety-sensitive positions. She got ticked and put through to HR, where I got a voice mail.

My friend is up for a desk jockey job so I would assume she will take a urine test, in which case, she is home free. She's freaking. Any info will be appreciated. She's also contemplating buying crap off the Internet which I told her would cause a neg dilute (she doesn't need) or shampoo, a sure failure. I told her to follow hair test instructions on this site if necessary.

Any real time info will be appreciated. O&M is being very coy.

The Federal Government regulates ALL testing for safety sensitive positions (Truck drivers, RR Engineers, Pilots, Transit employees, Flammable pipeline operators are some of the positions). The tests are ALWAYS urine tests. No hair tests are allowed for Federally regulated safety sensitive positions.

Non-federally regulated positions (like your desk jockey positions) are probably going to be a hair test.

haven't really heard to much about hair testing where i'm from. not sure if a lot of companys are doing that around here yet. but the place your talking about sounds like a very big company and very well could hair test. i've heard rumors about hair tests going back 6 yrs, than i heard 6 months, than i heard 90 days. i'll have to look into it more on here. interested to see how they actually test it. can they tell when you actually did a drug or your just positive or negative?
