Before starting their program, in the US. Technically they are employees, with their stipend, but would they actually be tested?

it would not shock me if they did. I really have no experience with this kind of issue tho. Why not call and ask if there is a "physical" or any other screening procedures prior to beginning the graduate program. You could call anonymously.

I'm too scared to; if I don't get an answer soon, I will. I really don't think they do but its worth asking.

I highly doubt it man. Grad students are some of the biggest stoners I know! It's not in the school's interest to drug test...I think you will be fine. If it makes you feel better, though, you might as well call anonymously and ask. But I think all will be ok.

I have two friends who attended grad school with stipends and neither were drug tested (same university). I have never heard of a grad student being drug tested simply because they were receiving a grant or any other kind of financial aid from state or government sources.

If you get caught with drugs, even a misdemeanor possession charge, you automatically lose all federal (and possibly state, not sure) student aid. Brilliant line of thinking there...screw someone out of federal aid who is trying to further their education to become a better member of society That's politics for ya!

i have a graduate assistantship that pays with a stipend, and i was not drug tested for it, i live in the US, if that helps you.

I think if it's a private school I might think it would be possible, but I'd highly doubt it for a public school... just a guess. I have friends who smoke and are grad students and never mentioned getting tests.
