It seems now like I'm wrong but I remember reading a long time ago that THC isn't what is tested for, but instead they test for other things that are in marijuana that stay in your system longer.

This is how I remember what I read "THC itself leaves your system quickly, but other chemicals only found in marijuana stay in your system much longer and therefor drug tests look for those."

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

THC metabolites, is the answer, I believe.

THC is psychoactive. After about 2 hrs the liver converts THC to its metabolites (delta-9 and delta-11 nor-THC) which are non-psychoactive but persist in your body for weeks. This is the irony about smokin pot: the high lasts for about an hour, but the 'evidence of smoking' lasts for weeks. And, this is why drug testing for pot is a boat load of crap b/c just testing positive for marijuana does nothing to indicate that you are under it's psychoactive influence. since the high was long-gone before you went to work or applied for a job.
