Let me say first that this is a great site. Thanks to all who provide such a great service.

The Situation: I have interviewed for a job in my mid-size city that is just so-so. But it is a job and jobs in my field (HR) are hard to come by in a city this size. I'm at a point where I may get an offer (tomorrow) which would of course be contingent on passing a pre-employment screen (I'm assuming urine, I don't know which type).

Relevant Data: I am 5' 9", 230 lbs, 32 yo. Chronic smoker from August 2001-May 2004. Last several months that has meant about 1/2 oz a month or 1-2 bowls daily. Quit smoking May 31st. Been doing cardio (spinning) 45 minutes 4 days a week for about a month and weight training 2x/week. Metabolism is slow to average. If accepting the offer, think I can delay the test until end of this week or beginning of next week (so between June 16-June 21).

Advice: I'm leery/scared of the substitution method as I do not know what situation I will encounter upon arriving at the testing facility. But also because of my field and the size of the city do not want to fail. Can turn down the offer and hope for another job but chances, while not zero, are on the low-moderate side that another possibility will come up anytime soon. Given this information, would you take the offer and therefore the test? What might you do to prepare? If using a home test, can you rely on what the home test says without sending it for back up testing?

of course you would want to take the offer if it is what you want to do...I spent 8 months out of work and just started doing research again last Monday so I know what you mean about jobs nowadays. As far as the test goes, I would still consider substituting for two reasons. First, it gives you a 100% chance of passing. Second, most, if not all drug tests that are for pre-employment are not monitored, they usually just put you in a bathroom with your cup and tell you not to flush the toilet. They may color the water blue in the toilet as well to keep you from using it. But other than that, they won't pat you down or any of that nonsense, since youare not on trial here or anything like that, and you are not on probation, so they assume you are drug free and you are doing this drug screening as a formality to you getting the job.

If you choose not to substitute, here is what I would do; continue your exercise regimen up until a day or two before the test. About 72 hours before the test, take creatine supplements in order to keep the creatinine levels up in your urine, which is tested by the drug company to verify the urine is not too dilute. You don't have to drink loads of water until the day of the test; 6-16oz glasses per day, the recommended allowance for anybody, should be enough for you. I would also consider eating a higher fiber diet the days leading up to the test, which will help to take fat cells and excrete them into your feces.

The day of the test, begin loading up on water or powerade. I recommend powerade since it has b vitamins in it, and will help to color your urine yellow. If you choose to drink water instead take a b-vitamin or two the day of the test. Urinate often the day of the test. I would recommend at least 5-6 times before doing to the test. About 1/2 hour before the test, take some aspirin, between 4-6; aspirin has been known to cause false negatives on the EMIT tests. In addition to these methods, I would eat a light meal the days leading up to the test, not a lot of fat and such.

Give a midstream sample at the test, whereby you first urinate into the toilet, then into the cup, and the rest into the toilet.

That should do it. If you choose to substitute, just make sure the temperature is in check and everything should be ok. With substitution, you will not have to worry about the results. And if you choose to sub, you can get urine from anyone who is clean, male or female, or you could order some quickfix off the internet which is a synthetic version that also works well. Read the subst. thread and the dilution thread for some added info I may have left out here in the post.
