Default Teaching Physical Examination

Hello, I'm actually asking this question on behalf of my wife because she recently got a new job as a high school english teacher.

This is what the little letter says:

Welcome! As a new employee of the such and such high school, you will need to schedule a physical examination. The following items will be paid by such and such, in addition to the physical:

Hemoglobin or Hematocrit

Urinalysis

Pap test

Tuberculin Test

Chest X-Ray

Stool for occult Blood


I was wondering if anyone has gone thru this before or might know what a Urinalysis might consist of?

She is a casual smoker like me and this is the first time she had to get a physical for a teaching position. Thank you

I highly doubt that urinalysis will encompass a drug screening; most likely testing for white blood cells and other signs off immune system function via the urine stream.

My two cents' says Mel is correct - if the school was going to drug test, why wouldn't they specify it up front? If she has any real concerns, I recommend the aspirin and cranberry juice regimin. Does her letter specify the time-frame in which she's required to take the physical, and who may perform it? I'm assuming they just want her regular MD to complete a form indicating the results of these measures.

The reason that I ask is that a Pap test and stool sample seem a bit of a stretch to me. Hemoglobin or Hematocrit, Urinalysis, Tuberculin Test, Chest X-Ray - those make some kind of sense to me, especially the Tuberculin test. But a Pap test and stool sample? It's not like cervical cancer or colo-rectal cancers are contagious!

My cousin just got a job as a teacher at our local high school and he didn't have to provide a drug test. Im sure the all have a system that they all follow so im 99% sure that she'll be alright.

we just moved back from las vegas and of all places they didn't even drug test her there. I find this society to be such a weird place sometimes. we moved out there for her job and I get a drug test just to work for expedia.com as a phone operator, but yet my wife is teaching hundreds of teenagers at very impressionable ages.

I honestly really don't understand.

No time frame on the physical at all. They haven't been buggin' her about it either, so i'm sure we're in the clear. She had stopped smoking for little over a month when she got the news about this job just to be safe, which i thought was a good idea.

the problem you face is that the area you are employed probably experienced a high rate of problems, that may or may not have been related to drug use in or around the workplace; for this reason they use the testing as a precautionary measure. You will notice in the workplace, a lot of the time, as the salary gets bigger, the chance of a drug test gets smaller; that is why you hear most people on here getting tested for retail store chains or for warehouses or DOT positions and the military; rarely will you find the higher paid salary postions, so to speak having to worry about a drug test (of course there are exceptions like the government and IBM and many financial institutions, but you never really know for sure)

There is no rhyme or reason to who gets tested, but if you are in a profession with a higher turnover rate, they tend to target these companies especially; it helps to hire reliable workers. No one likes a lounger on the job unless you can get away with it
