I'm thinking about taking an offer with this hospital in town and want to know what kind of drug test they require.. any ideas?? Should I just call and ask without giving my name?? Isn't there some web site out there with a database of the companies that drug test by state?

Another question: I failed a drug test with a company a few months back. I didn't list them on my application with the hospital. Is there any way for the hospital to know that I use to work for that company AND is there any way for them to know I failed a drug test in the past?? - where's the privacy?

Well, here's some info... hope some other folks will jump in and help!

I don't recommend it. Most employers don't get a lot of calls like that, and the attention it could raise wouldn't be helpful. Just try to be prepared for the two most common, hair and pee. If it's hair, you should have some warning to give you time to get a cut and/or super chemical cleansing. Lots of threads about that on the Drug Testing forum.

It was dated when I looked at it six years ago; it's probably worse now! Have you looked at the employers website? Some do discuss this topic.

You should be OK about leaving the last job off. I did the same thing once, when I took a job, found that I hated it, and left it after 1 week. And no, the new employer has no way to access the failed drug test info from the previous employer. BUT be aware that HR reps move from company to company, just like we do. And I don't care what anyone says about HIPAA or privacy regulations, they DO talk! But it soulnds like you should be OK here. Good luck!

protected health information, such as drug test results, when discolsed to other people, is a violation of HIPAA and is punishable up to 250,000 dollars and jail time (10 years possibly!!) so health professionals DO NOT take any risks, but aside from that, those results are confidential, and will never be discussed with other employers; if any employer does find out, that could be a lawsuit you will easily win. For this reason, I would not worry about your previous tests.

As to your current situation, do not call the hospital, that is a horrible idea; keep in mind 99% of tests are urine; very rarely is any other test employed; hair tests are done rarely, and are hard to beat; blood tests are rare, as are mouth swabs, but those two tests only detect THC for 24-48 hours after the last time you smoke.

When you fill out the application for employment, they should disclose to you if a drug test is performed; make sure you read everything you sign
