On six months probation for a first-time misdemeanor DUI. Daily smoker for years, but have been clean now 30 days. 5'-8", 170 lbs.

I'd heard random urine tests in cases like mine were rare -- even my atty said it would be unlikely -- so like a dumbass I slowed down but didn't stop altogether. As luck would have it when I met with my PO in late Oct. she sent me for a random urine. I freaked, because I'd smoked the day before (and the day before, and they day before). You get the picture.

Long story short -- his advice was to give the pee and NOT PAY FOR THE TEST. His theory was that the lab wouldnt release the results. Evidently, this worked...I went to the next monthly appointment (Nov. 24), my PO was off-duty, and her replacement said nothing about the previous test from Oct. This is Florida; some folks ain't too bright, or it could have been a case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. In any case the first test wasn't an issue.

Unfortunately, this time the substitute PO also sent me to do a random urine -- which is in a building near the probation office. At this location (and as with most people on probation) I was observed.

Fortunately, here's what I had in my favor:

The first test scare in October put the fear in me bad. So I quit smoking and started hitting the gym three to four days a week. Weights, cardio, treadmill, and some bike riding too. Also went on the Atkins diet hard-core, losing some 10 lbs in the process. I stopped all exercise two days before this PO session. I ate a huge-ass steak two days before. For creatine.

The morning of the test I drank several quarts of water and sugar-free tea to which I added salt. I took four aspirin two hours before, two an hour before, and two more on the way to the PO appointment. Drank another quart of water on the way there. By the time I got there (9 am) I'd probably urinated at least 8 times. Including once in the bathroom of the probation building on the way to the test center.

This time I followed atty's advice -- I peed (very clear, like water -- I found that vitamins looked too glowing-weird) and I paid. So whatever the results are, my PO will find out.

To recap:

Clean for thirty days. Four weeks of intense exercise, started laying around lazy 48 hours before testing. Used dilution/aspirin technique day of test.

Lessons learned: Probation is serious bidness -- I wish I'd quit as soon as I should have. However, abstaining has been surprisingly easy, and I've had no side effects or cravings (and I remember lots 'o dreams in the a.m.) I crave bread and pasta much, much more than smoke.

Also, get a lawyer who knows this stuff...it saved my ass once so far.

I will report back next week...when I find out something. I could do a home test; but it really wouldn't matter much, other than to ease my mind.

Not quite sure why you were originally told that the possiblity of a test was slim, they're almost always given for probation, especially for a DUI. Anyway, you should pass, just hope you don't get flagged for dilution. You were probably clean without all the water and asprin. Again, you should pass, and if you do come up diluted, they will ask for a retest. I recomend buying a home test on ebay, and testing yourself without dilution. Anyway, good luck!!!

It is much better to just stay clean and not risk any possible jail time or extended probation. Play into their game be an angel so they can't keep you on any longer than they have too. I'm currently on probation and have been clean for 27 days now (WoooHoooo!) and plan on staying that way until my probation is up.

Psychological addiction is exactly that -- all in one's mind. I'm lucky enough to work for a company that prides itself on never drug-testing anyone, which means a pretty liberal, party-friendly culture. So smoking has been part of an image and persona for me for years.

Still, I've kept the DUI and probation a secret from my co-workers. I have no desire to do anything to violate the terms of my probation. It is supposed to be finished at the end of Feb.

A violation would probably mean throwing out the months I've completed, turning back the clock and starting the six months all over again. Which would blow. But, I'd imagine, not nearly as bad as going to jail.

Wonder how the Atkins/exercise will affect the test? Or what the cutoff level is for probation? (taking the urine test costs me $40).

My situation is a bit different. My DUI was drug related and I'm tested pretty much each appointment. I'm about 5'10" 160, muscular build, and a very fast metabolism. I used to smoke everyday while on probation until I failed my first test because I didn't dilute enough(I only drank about 2 quarts of fluids and smoked about 8 hours before the test...very very stupid) Anyways, I'm going to see my P.O. Thursday and I took a few hits this weekend. I've passed about 4 times using dilution and not smoking about 3 days before a test. I wouldn't reccomend this to anyone at all because now I'm sitting here with two home test kits and a gallon of gatorade practicing. It'll be quite calming once I pass the home test, but up until now I've been soooo nerveous about the whole ordeal. It's better just to abstain I suppose, which I am going to do as of now. Especially since I face 3-6 months jail time if I fail. Just a little advice to anyone on probation: Yes, you can cheat the test, but it's not worth the hassel or the jail time. Bud is bud...it's amazing how much more focused you can be while totally sober, but it is a very wonderful herb. Once the rest of the country realizes how much easier it would be to decriminalize Marijuana, us unfortunates can rest at ease and enjoy a nice mellow life. Until then dillution should be a last resort for a stoner. Take care all and I'll post my results for both my tests once I complete them.

Just took my first at home test as follows: About one hour prior I drank about 3/4 of a gallon of water along with 4 asprin about 40 minutes before. Pissed about twice before test then tested and came up very very negative. Both lines were quite solid. Everybody's body is different and it may take longer to break up THC, but this worked for me, but I'm only going to do it once more for probation and that's it. Good luck to everyone who may have been nerveous like me.

Well hopefully you won't get flagged for dilution because At-Home tests can be passed very easily because you aren't able to test for Specific Gravity.

I did find a place that sells home tests for sg, creatine, ph, and some other stuff.

Agreed. My P.O. never tested for S.G. and one instance I couldn't piss so she told me to drink as much as I could before I came back to see her a few hours later, and I've passed no questions asked with really clear urine. To be on the safe side I suppose I should down a few TBL spoons of salt before I do the real deal.

Wow your lucky I wish my PO didn't take the time to check Specific Gravity then I could easily smoke and pass. Unfortunately I have been forced to abstain but it'll be well worth it in the end when I'm off in the shortest amount of time possible. Hopefully in the next 54 days....
