Question How many employers REALLY randomly test?

Starting new job next week.

Already made provided my sample for the piss test, and I'm not worried about that since I haven't smoked at all during my job search.

The company policy does state that they randomly drug test. But how many companies REALLY do test randomly?

Has anyone or someone they know ever really been requested to do a drug test out of the blue, without any previous incidents or reasonable suspicion?

I'm just doing a run of the mill customer service job. Nothing involving safety, transportation, law enforcement, hazardous materials, etc.

TIA.

They are required to inform you if they have a random drug test policy.
If they don't, it could leave them open to litigation. Granted, this may not hold up in court, but most HR departments operate under the assumption that their policies should be clear, concise, and available to all. It eliminates surprises and is more benficial to the work force than hidden or secret policies.
You could try asking a co-worker once you are there for a bit.
Good luck

Yes, the offer letter does specifically state that they randomly test. That was clear.

When private companies do random drug testing, do I have to provide a sample within a few days, or is there often a warning window?

I am familiar with two companies who random test and they both follow up on the policy. In each instance you have 2 hours to complete the test or you are fired-- this includes salespeople-- a friend had to cancel appointments with two qualified prospects at the last minute to go test and he lost both opportunities--smart eh?

More and more businesses are learning how expensive drug tests are-- typical costs in fortune 500 companies to discover a postive are like $50,000 and higher-- test 10,000 employees and find 3 or 4. Companies are backing down from drug testing. The peak was 1988 and fewer test now than did then.

Ask a few co-workers if they or know anyone that has been randomly tested while working for the company. If it is stated in the offer letter than they certainly could do it.

If you find out that they will be testing randomly consider carrying some synthetic urine and read threads on substitution so if called for a random test you can provide a clean sample. Good luck...

Default workplace testing

Hope you are still not worried but if you are tips to keep yer job
Know all details of the drug testing policy, ask for the written policy so you know their procedure if they implemented the policy, assume they will do random tests they may have a written protocol for random testing....the policy may state that they will randomly choose random employees (the co. may be trying to comply with insurance co. recommendations or something)
it may state that they have the right to randomly test if they have a reason to, even desk jobs have potential safety risks according to government standards; which may indicate they will test less frequently at any rate, it should all be in writing and assume that employees may be asked to test
Asking other employees about the subject is a very good idea, but don't take what they say as absolute face value, you never know
The best thing you can do is be prepared
you can stop
or if you don't - know their policy regarding the actual test...
do they test onsite or send you to a lab?
do they give you a week or 2 hours before you have to test?
If onsite, what kind of test do they administer, ex: do they collect your urine onsite, then send the sample to a lab or do a test like a home test you buy from the drug store onsite?
If you go to a lab, what kind of test do they run?
answers to these questions will help you know what you may need to know if asked to test, find out all you can about a test
Know how long your toxins may stay in your body
Once you find out about policies, timeframes, and types of testing they administer, you can prepare yourself In the meantime, try to relax
