| Hello everyone... My stats: 30 y/o male. 175 lbs and just under 6 ft. Fairly regular user over the past 10 yrs or so. No tobacco use in years and no known health issues. My situation: Never had to worry about testing before for any reason. Last usage was yesterday evening. I'm due to take an exam (blood, urine) for a life insurance policy next Tuesday - 8 days from now. Scheduled the test as far in the future as possible while avoiding questions. My brother is the agent so I am somewhat obligated to buy a small policy. Because the test has no bearing upon employment (this is between me and the insurance company) I'm not freaked as I otherwise would be. But I'm concerned as the results WILL BE written down somewhere and that the premium will be affected. My questions are obvious: Does anyone know if a typical life insurance exam tests for THC metabolites? What steps shall I take to minimize the chances of being burned? Dilution and prayer seem to be the advice given to people in my situation. Am I missing anything? Is honesty the best policy with these people? What pre-emptive activities should I concentrate upon over the next week? Substitution is out of the question because my crew is in as deep as I am and I'd rather not solicit a urine sample from people outside of my circle...you understand. Incidentally, a friend of mine who works in healthcare finance says that most of the time insurance companies don't test for drugs unless otherwise directed to do so because of the cost involved. Does that sound correct? As a last ditch solution, I could call next week and tell them I'm sick (I doubt that they would want to deal with me under those conditions). That could probably buy me a few days but no more. Thanks in advance. |

| Have you asked your brother the insurance agent? I'd think he'd be someone in whom you could confide. If you've been smoking for 10 years he probably knows about it.

| I'm not concerned with anyone other than the insurance company. Everyone else knows that I use or that I have partaken. Unfortunately, my brother is brand new at this game and won't know what they test for without placing a call. I'll ask anyway. However, in principle, my questions still stand and any info would be greatly appreciated. |

| I was in the same situation a year ago... do NOT be honest about your marijuana use! They do not always test for marijuana (as they do with Cocaine) but if you indicate you may have used recently (within 5 years), they may actually test and find out what a pothead you really are. My advice is to say you have never used it. I did not do this with the first company I applied with, saying I had used once in the past year, and got a frequent cigarette smoker rate of 5x what I had originally been quoted. I do not know if they actually tested to verify, b/c I did not accept the policy and never saw my results. I applied with a different company and said I had never used it, they gave me the low rate and never tested for it. |

| You can buy human urine from several vendors. Here are a couple. http://www.mycleanpee.com/ and http://www.pretestedurine.com/ As far as blood test, that shouldn't be a problem either. This is from NORML. http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=4934#blood Hope that helps. N2

| Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated. Anyone else with advice please post. Although tah255 says not to admit use, if I don't and test positive what are the possible outcomes? I guess they could deny coverage or raise the premium. My guess is that, being a business, they would jack the rate before walking away from a potential sale. As it stands now my rationale is as follows: 1. This is not an employment test therefore I'm not as concerned about testing negative as I otherwise would be. 2. My use is no secret so being outed isn't that big of a deal. Also, as iroinc as it is, the law says that the results can't be shared. 3. tah255's take on things is what I've been thinking all along. If they find out and jack up the price, I'll walk. 4. I plan on diluting prior to testing including creatine, B complex vits, asprin and lots of water. This is my only real way to get around a test as I've been a regular user about 10 years (one week is not long enough to ensure a negative result). I'm not fat and I'm moderately active so perhaps that will also help but I'm pretty saturated. 5. I have no other substances in my body so the test for coke, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, etc. will be negative which may lend credence to my denial (from their point of view). 6. I also drink Dr. Hagiwara's Green Magma daily which does wonders (over time) with respect to cleansing the body. It's chock-full of natural fiber, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Perhaps that too will help in some way. BTW, I highly recommend this product to anyone who doesn't eat a balanced diet. In a nutshell it is a barley grass supplement that provides about 5x the RDA of fruits and veggies per serving. |

| Update for those of you who care.... Talked to my brother today. The test I was to be given was the EMIT. I told him that there was no way in hell I was going to voluntarily submit to the test and that we would have to work on another solution. In the end I went with a much smaller policy that may require only a mouth swab. He said that the swab is to test for HIV/AIDS, tobacco and some other issues. Of course mj will show on a mouth swab but he said they don't test for that. From my little bit of research, I see that mj is detectable in saliva for up to 16 hours after usage. Is that correct? Just to be on the safe side, I'll abstain for 3-4 days prior to the test. BTW, if you test positive this particular company denies coverage - they don't offer the smoker's rate. Obviously, that's not something you want floating around in a database somewhere. Luckily I asked before I was probed... |
