Hey all, I have been stressing about the possibility that my pre-emb drug screen will be GC/MS right off the bat (rather than a 50ng/ml test such as EMIT first, and then followed by GC/MS if something is fishy). Anyway, I just noticed that I will be taking a drug screen, not a drug 'test'. Is there a difference, or are those interchangeable terms? My hopeful side thinks that screening does not involve GC/MS, but 'testing' does. Any ideas? w00dy

A drug screen is the same as a drug test.

I believe that the GC/MS cutoff is lower because it only tests for a particular thc metabolite that makes up about a third of the thc metabolites tested for in a standard EMIT. So it is not necessarily true that the GC/MS is a more stringent test then the EMIT, it is simply more accurate. I believe that what I have said above is correct, but would appreciate confirmation from one of the experts.

| A drug screen refers to an assay type test. It screens out anything that looks like a marijuana metabolite. A drug test is usually accompanied by the word conformation. It is generally a GC/MS test and specificly targets only 1 marijuana metabolite, THC COOH. While the term test is commonlly used for an initial screen, the term screen is never used for a conformation test. Hope that helps. N2

To bump this up again, is one easier to pass than the other or are they the same?

I've been told by someone very knowledgeable on this forum that one (the immunoassay) is no tougher than the GC/MS. The immunoassay looks for all THC metabolities, while the GC/MS targets just one type of THC metabolite, like N2 said. From what I understand, the GC/MS is usually only performed when to confirm a positive result on the immunoassay. If you're neg on the first part and your urine passes an integrity check for creatinine, specific gravity, adulterants (from detox drinks), etc., you're good to go. I read how a GC/MS test is performed and it sounds pretty darn time consuming annd expensive. Quest and LabCorp would rather overcharge companies and other hysterical shrews millions and millions of dollars for dip stick tests, than take up their valuable time and equipment confirming negative results.
