So here's my story:

I am a college student at one of the top 5 engineering schools in the country that was working as a Software Engineering co-op at a local company, paid $15-18/hr (I still haven't gotten the check yet).

I smoke almost daily. I am 19, 5'11" ,165 lbs, about 5% bodyfat(very low), athletic, pretty muscular, so I imagine I hold less THC than the average person.

I went into my first day of work, last Tuesday, and within the first few minutes I find out that I am going to have to get tested. I was pretty surprised, because I had worked for the same company for a short time over winter break, and they didn't test me.

They tell me to go get a drug screen that night, but I could have gone any night that week, really. I drank lots of water all day long, my urine was very clear. I went and bought a home test at CVS, tested negative (I guess because it was dilute). About 20 minutes later, I go and take the real test. I worked the rest of the week.

Monday morning, I get a call from the doctor saying to call back. By the time I get out of work to notice the call, they aren't at the office anymore.

Tuesday morning, when I call back, the doctor tells me that I tested positive for marijuana. I tell him and my parents that I had not smoked in the last 2 years, but had been exposed to second-hand smoke several times during the spring semester (lie).

Today (Wednesday), a woman from HR comes up to me and says that they need to talk to me. I go into this little room, they tell me my drug screen shows a "bonafide positive". However, it showed low levels, indicating infrequent use (but I'm practically a daily smoker, it was just dilute). They say to gather my posessions, and escort me to the door. My computer still on, with everything I was working on lying on my desk.

My dad, who works at the same company, comes home for lunch to talk to me about it. I still tell him it was second-hand smoke. He starts talking about hiring a lawyer to see if I can't get a second opinion. At this point, I realize that if I keep lying, I will be in MAJOR trouble, so I confess. He doesn't get too upset, but is disappointed. He makes me agree to not smoke again (I still don't know if I will uphold this, even after everything, I still don't think that weed is a bad thing).

At this point, I am 99% sure I will be terminated from my position. They have a policy that if you test positive, they can't employ you for the next 12 months. So, I now have to find a crappy low-skill job for the rest of the summer, and make like 60% or so of what I would have, and not have this job to put on my resume.

Moral of the story: don't give a drug screen your piss if you think you might test positive, use your friend's clean urine, or buy something that will make your urine produce a negative. Don't believe a home test if you think it's negative because you are dilute.

Readers, it works most of the time, but dilution is not 100% effective!
And like Munky suggest, substitution with a clean sample is the best way to insure you pass.

The body's metabolism is a strange thing. Sorry to hear about the hell you went through. Like N2 said, dilution is not 100%... but substitution is. Good thing you confessed and spared your folks the cost of a lawyer. Lawyer would have been a waste of money, even if one took the case. They would run another gc/ms on you and they would undoubtely find a molecule or two floating around.

Sounds like they dropped below the 50 ng/ml level (15 ng/ml on one specific metabolite with the gc/ms) for you. Sucks.
