| Are there any drug tests that can tell the difference between Marinol and smoking marijuana? Does synthetic THC look the same as smoking marijuana on the test? Is there any way to tell the difference? Specific tests or different test for people with a legal prescription |

| Our staff chemist ( ) tells us that the difference can be detected in a GC/MS test but not an EMIT.

| Buzzby, That is correct sir...!! I researched this extensively, and found that there is a small chemical difference between ingestion of marijuana, and ingestion of Marinol.... Both will show positive on the initial screen, but can be decifered with the dreaded GC test. Did you just say that??? Peace Wiz |

So if say someone were going to claim "false positive" because they had been prescribed marinol -- think it through again... Not to mention a Marinol is a difficult script to obtain Is costly on the legal market (about $15 a pill) -- so very costly on the black market... And consider this: That black market Marinol you purchase means that some suffering AIDS Patient, Cancer Patient or other seriously ill individual is being denied their medicine... And that is just plain Bad Karma...

![]() The logical supposition would be that they'll make some more to compensate for losses in channels. That's what they do for every other drug that finds its way into the black market. Drugstores aren't running out of Oxycontin...

| Yup, they're identical. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...601&query_hl=1 They look for other metabolites in the urine sample that wouldn't be found from Marinol use, but in marijuana usage.

| That study shows that with GC/MS testing it is possable to distinguise between THC-COOH and THCV-COOH. But I don't see anything about testing standards being changed. If I go in for my annual DOT UA, and had a script for Marinol, is MedTox going to run a second GC/MS to determin the presents, or lack of, of THCV-COOH, to determin if marijuana has been consumed along with Marinol, and if so, is that allowed under DOT/SAMHSA guidelines to test for THCV-COOH? I was just looking and could not find any regs for DOT or SAMHSA specifying what specific metabolite(s) is/are to be tested for with the GC/MS conformation for THC. Is THC-COOH listed somewhere in a gov reg as the only metabolite used to confirm, or is it just the metabolite the labs chose? N2
