Will a urine sample that screens positive for THC degrade over time and produce different results on a GC/MS than a fresh sample tested immediately would?

I believe that labs keep + samples in the lab for up to a year. They keep these results for legal reasons, if you want to challenge them in court. IMO, I believe that if the metabolites would degrade in that time period then it would be useless for them to keep them. So I believe that the results would be the same as long as the urine was stored properly. Urine is good for up to a year in the freezer preserving all components of the urine and I would think that this would include the THC metabolites. This is my opinion though. Hope I am wrong! ![]()

Thanks for the feedback, I think you are right. It can be frozen up to a year. In my case, after it screened pos., the sample sat on a shelf in the probation department at room temp. for 4 days before it was sent for GC/MS confirmation. They mispaced my paperwork, which they still can't find!! I should get the results today. I'm just hoping against hope I might be able to say they mishandled my sample. I'm pretty sure I'm done for.

Long shot here but......if they lost your paper work then how can they 100% prove that this is your sample? On the paper work that they send to the lab their are serial numbers that identify that it is your urine. The paper work that has the serial numbers MUST be matched to the serial numbers that seal the container shut. This MIGHT be in your favor as the chain of custody may be disrupted. It's a long shot but you may be able to argue this and pray they don't find the paper work. Good luck ![]() ShoreThing2005
