Hey everyone. I have a stupid question:

I took a drug test on 11/11/05 for a job that will not start until 1/11/06. I haven't been contacted yet about anything , specifically whether or not I passed the test. Is it normal for an employer not to inform you if you failed a pre-employment urine test? I asked a few friends, and most said that I shouldn't worry.... I just wanted another opinion. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you call the hiring manager, to wish him/her a Very Merry Christmas, and you're so excited to start working for him/her in Jan... Act upbeat.... Don't mention the test, etc.... Maybe they also were doing a background check on you , and it takes longer, or the person has been out sick. I worried one time, and the hiring manager had taken a weeks vacation, and then the HR person was out.

Just play it cool . . .

If you have a start date already, they have no reason to call you to tell you that you passed the drug test. They would certainly have called you if you hadn't.

Buzzby, with the test done on a Friday, and Thanksgiving week being generally taken off by some, that would only leave 8 working days for the process.... Could it be possible they sent for further testing, and therefore are just finding out the results?

Its also possible that the lab is backed up because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Its not uncommon for labs to be backed up for up to two weeks because of the holiday season.

Very true, but with out all of the slowdowns most employers want thier results back in 72 hours max. At least that is what they tell me at the lab I use for practice runs.

I know this is a bit late to reply, but it is pertinent to the conversation. All labs are backed up due to hurricane Katrina. It wiped out one of the largest DHHS approved labs in the country - Kroll Labs, Inc., in New Orleans, LA. Kroll has been sending 100% of their tests to Quest. Quest does Kroll's test when it has finished with their own client's tests. All the other labs have suffered a marked increase in volume due to Kroll's situation. Kroll has, just this month started sending tests to a newly acquired lab in No. Carolina., but will not be doing DOT tests until the end of January or February. Also, it is now taking about 6-8 days for Kroll to get results. Thats why we have started using other labs. Generally you have a 24 hour turn-around on a negative test and 36-72 hour turn-around on positives (non-negatives). Then the MRO has to review the test (add another 24-72 hours). Positives take forever.
