So, I've been offered a job as an intern, and I'm set to begin on Tuesday. I got the job offer packet in the mail today, and on the employee agreement appear the following words: "as a new staff member, you will be subject to the provisions of our drug-free workplace policy." Of course, I just crapped my pants. What does this mean? Does it mean that they're going to drug test me, or does it mean that they just have the "if we suspect" policy? There's nothing online, and asking the HR rep might seem a bit incriminating. How often do employers offer you the job and send you the agreement and THEN make you take a test after? It seems kind of strange to me. Thanks!

I know nobody. Is there a non-conspicuous way to ask the HR rep what the hell that vague, vague quote means?

Why not ask if the test is Urine, because you are shy and don't like when other people watch. You have a hard time going.

Hmm...not a bad idea. It wouldn't pin the question on me, but it's still kind of...strange? "Hi, I'm interested...do you drug test?" I could ask them if they need a physical?

[quote= I got the job offer packet in the mail today, and on the employee agreement appear the following words: "as a new staff member, you will be subject to the provisions of our drug-free workplace policy." Thanks![/QUOTE] "Drug Free Workplace" is the new "Equal Opportunity Employer" slogan. If your employer has a drug free workplace policy, they should have included it in the packet along with all the benefits, safety guidlines, vacation schedules, etc... basically all that stuff you get when you start and job and go to orientation. Besides, an employer cannot get a government contract or take any federal government money unless they have a comprehensive drug free workplace policy in place. It has been my experience that if that is the only statement in the policy, then they do not test. Usually employers who test have provisions in their drug free workplace policy stating exactly what will happen if you are caught possessing, distributing, dispensing, selling or buying illegal substances or legal substances in an illegal manner. It should further state if there is an EAP (Employer Assistance Program) and how you qualify to receive benefits. Also, did the packet contain a "conditional offer of employment"? In other words, did they say or is it written anywhere that you have the job if you pass the background/drug screening? Larger employers do have all this done by their Human Resource Department. Smaller employers probably don't. Long story short, you need more info.
