Okay so heres the story...

Monday night, I was at a party where a bunch of guys were smoking heavily. I didn't smoke any and I never have. The next day, I get a call from a place that wants to hire me. I got really excited. They said that I'd be perfect for the job... all I had to do was pass a background check/drug test.

So today (Thursday), I remembered the party and I got worried because I really really need this job. My friend told me that drinking a lot of water will dilute it and get it out of my system for sure. So I did. I drank 2 full bottles of Dasnai water an hour before I got tested, that's 40 fluid ounces of water (1.25 quarts). I get to Quest Diagnostics and I pee into the cup and they say, "Wow, that's a lot. you must of drank a lot of water." and I was like... yes I did. Then they say, "You know, you can get rejected for drinking too much water because they think you're trying to hide something." In my head, I was like F***!

So my question is... Did I drink too much water? Will I fail? Thanks for any help.

Did they observe the test or were you by yourself? Did they accept the sample?

If it is too dilute, you may just have to take another test.

Yes, they accepted the sample. They were really careful when they took it. They like felt on me to see if I had anything to hide and made me get rid of all my possessions. Then when I went into the restroom, there was a guy listening through the door. If it is, "too diluted", will I get another chance to prove myself or will the job be denied to me completely because I failed. This is really making me nervous... Any help is appreciated.

If it is too diluted, they may test you again. Many people who take the urine test, and have nothing to worry about, will drink lots of water to ensure they can go to the bathroom. If they ask, just say you have a hard time peeing so you drank a lot beforehand. If they reschedule you for another test, you will be clean by then. You are not even a smoker, so I think that your sample was probably already ok. I wouldn't stress it.

You'll be fine. Unless your friends were exhaling their smoke into your mouth french-kiss style, you'll be fine. And in general, a dilute test is not a failure, just invalid and needs to be redone.

Actually, "they" had no choice. If you gave a specimen, and it was of the correct quantity and temperature, they have to accept it. One cannot tell if a specimen is diluted just by looking at it. I took one the other day that looked like pure water. I told the donor that it looked really clear, and it might come back as a diluted result. There is absolutely NO reason not to accept a specimen, and to NOT accept an acceptable specimen is against protocol.

They cannot "frisk" you. That is actually an assault (assuming this is not a court ordered or parole officer requested drug test). They would not have asked you to "get rid of" your possessions. You may keep your wallet, everything else must go on a table, locker, basket, (whatever container they use).

Are you sure you are not exaggerating a bit? Did they ask you to empty your pockets and remove all outer clothing? Did the collector wait outside the bathroom door? All in this paragraph is correct protocol.

Could go 50-50. either way. I think your paranoia has gotten to you. Just the mere mention of the word "Diluted" has gotten you all upset. Believe me, there is no way a collector can tell just by looking at a specimen, if it is diluted or not.
