| Does anyone know how old urine will test differently than fresh urine? In other words, what levels no longer test as "normal"? Creatinine, specific gravity, ph...? |

| Old urine smells of ammonia because the urea breaks down very quickly. The difference is obvious without any kind of fancy laboratory testing.

| Thanks Buzzby. Other than the smell will it still "test" normally? At one place I go to test, I'm sent into a bathroom by myself to submit a sample. I don't think odor matters cuz' the sample will sit at room temp for up to twelve hours before being sent out to a lab for testing. Then it's common for the sample to sit at the lab overnite before it's handled and tested. I have to be ready everyday. Always having a fresh sample to submit is tough. I've always used synthetic in the past but that is getting expensive. I'm wondering since it sits all day anyway would it be okay to submit a "not fresh" sample of real urine. Thanks again |

So my question still stands: Is the odor the only way to tell if urine is a few days old? Will it still test normally? Thank you | |

| They only check the creatinine level. Like I said, where the sample is collected is not where the testing is done. The samples collected sit at room temp in a wastebasket for up to 12 hours depending on how early in the day they are submitted. At the end of the day (6pm) they are then sent to the testing facility. The results come back to the collection site a few days later. The results sheet lists the results for each drug tested for and the creatinine level. I'm assuming they take into account the fact that the urine sits at room temp for so long at the collection site when doing any integrity check. So, will urine that is a few day old test at normal creatinine levels? |
