long story short, i plan on carrying QF with me at all times at my job since i get randomly tested. some other people that have worked there for a while said that after they pee, the test receiver uses a laser thermometer or some shit... he described it as putting a black handheld device up to the bottom of the bottle... i've never ever heard of this... is it possible? or could it be something else....

I've never heard of this but either way wouldn't it just be measuring the temperature which is no problem if you are taking proper steps to heat up your substitution. If you're not then you're going to fail even if they use a mercury thermometer.

It is a regular thermometer but you can measure temps from a distance, like if you stood in a room and pointed it at the wall it would tell you how hot the wall is. They probably just use it to take the temp. without opening the sample. hope this helps.

The laser is used to take temps for about anything. It is just an expensive way of taking a temp.

Boy, here's where my experience as a quasi, self-taught tech writer comes in. It is probably an infrared thermometer. I had to write some long-ass article on this ten years ago. IRTs convert energy into electrical signals that can be displayed into units of temp measurements. IRTs are used a lot by public health inspectors to take quick readings of refrigeration in grocery stores, or hot food temps in restaurants. Now piss.

Sounds like this is the device that was used to take the temp on your piss. (Thank God those days are over.)

Even mechanics use them now for example to check the temp of anti freeze through the radiator hose, cat converters, etc. They are handy little tool and like you say have many uses.
