I just had an interview on Friday and everything went well, but there was no mention of a drug test during the interview. They did tell me there was going to be a background check. After the interview they called me and asked for permission to contact my current employer, so I'm pretty sure I got the job. Since the job is working for the county I was really worried about a drug test. In previous experiences I was notified about a drug test at the intial interview. Should I still be worried about a possible test or should I be in the clear??

I think something Sec3 and Hawg and 1toke and a couple of others like to point out is that if on the application if you see a "drug-free workplace" on it, you will be tested. Also, plan for the worst which would be a drug test and hope for the best, no drug test.

They didn't give me an application yet but they did give me a "position profile" paper, and there is no mention of a drug test under employment eligibility qualificaitons. I'm planning on using substitution if I have to. My wife dosen't smoke and she is willing to donate to the cause. The employer is supposed to call me on Monday, after they talk to my current employer, which is when I assume they will make an offer... and hopefully no mention of a drug test!

A lot of our local govt's don't spend the money to test. I am surprised they are even doing the background check. That being said, your county might just be one of those who are diligent about who they hire and perform drug testing. Stop smoking now, until after you have been tested or know if you won't be tested. Take your wife's urine each day you meet with the administrators. Pack it where it is best concealed, in a 2-4 ounce bottle and attach a hand warmer to the side. The warmer will keep the urine warm for 8-10 hours. That gives you ample opportunity to sub for the first few meetings. After that, perhaps you could be clean enough to sub on your own if need be. The next time you have a meeting with them, ask for their employee handbook or policies. Tell them you want to check out the benefits and such. If the handbook mentions drug testing or a drug free workplace, chances are you will be tested at some point. If not, then you can assume you are free and clear.
